After hearing this album (and finding out it's his fourth!), we wonder why we're just getting to know Sam Bisbee. The outstanding guy-meets-gal harmonies on "Never Fall in Love" with Leona Naess tap into the similar magic that Damien Jurado and Jenna Conrad created on their most recent effort.
Miranda Lee Richards creates what she calls "psychedelic chamber folk rock," and her moody and introspective songs definitely contain faint shimmers of whimsical psychedelia paired with personal folk stylings, resulting in reflective and timeless folk tunes.
I'm not a fan of the Grammy awards--I think they offer too many awards and give the big ones to too many has-beens or otherwise undeserving acts--but this year's show, scheduled for Sunday, sounds like the best in years. With bright, clashing costumes and just the right amount of irony, Of Montreal could be the most likable indie-rock band around. Their schizophrenic style ranges from caffeinated pop to lovemaking funk in a matter of seconds. In other words, they have a lot of energy but can also smooth it out like Barry White.
You could down a $5 Cinnamon Dolce Frappuccino in ten minutes, and it's gone forever. How many Cafe Mochas do you buy in a week? Tasty as these frothy concoctions can be, it's a fleeting satisfaction, isn't it? An album's worth of music is a repeatable pleasure, something you may enjoy dozens of times over the years. With so many '60s revival bands killing the scene right now, it's hard to remember what year it is. Like their contemporaries The Black Keys, Heartless Bastards are also from Ohio and are so damn raw you could dip them in soy sauce.
Cohorts Joshua Eustis and Charles Cooper blend precise laptop drum programming, ambient electronic sounds, lush orchestral passages, and velvety singing with a heavy dose of live instrumentation, including a Fender Rhodes keyboard. It's the addition of organic sounds that sets Telefon Tel Aviv apart from its contemporaries; these two are masters of creating soundscapes and intricate electro-rhythms, but they can also flat out play.
