Microsoft Q2: By the numbers

Microsoft has issued its first earnings scorecard since the introduction of the Windows 8 operating system and of Surface, its first branded tablet computer. The company's fiscal second-quarter report also opens the latest window -- no pun intended -- onto the pace of decline of PC shipments as more people switch over to smartphones and tablets.

Here are some of the highlights by the numbers:

Revenue: $21.5 billion Net income: $6.38 billion Windows: $5.88 billion, up 24 percent year-over year. (That number includes revenue deferrals tied to an earlier upgrade offer as well as presales. On … Read more

Yes, LG will continue to make cheap plasma TVs

LG's 2013 plasma lineup is smaller than last year's, but the company is still making the non-LCD TVs. In addition to the sole top-end plasma, the 60-inch 60PH6700, there will be a pair of step-down series that lack Smart TV and 3D. As usual pricing was not announced, but these are bound to be among the least expensive televisions in their respective classes.

One will encompass two sizes, the 50-inch 50PN6500 and the 60-inch 60PN6500. Its main features are 1080p resolution and a new "Hair Line" bezel, which we assume means a thinner frame around the … Read more

Kia conceptualizes hot hatch for Geneva

Following Rolls-Royce's announcement of its new Wraith model for the upcoming International Motor Show in Geneva, Kia offered up relatively clear pictures of, but few details about, a concept car it will put on display.

The body style looks like a three-door hatchback, similar to the European-market Pro Cee'd. In a press release, Kia refers to it as a "provocative and racy new urban concept car." Among concept cars, "Urban" often refers to a compact SUV. However, Kia's new concept, despite some resemblance to Nissan's Juke, appears to sit at hatchback height, … Read more

Tim Cook dances around the Apple TV question -- again

Apple CEO Tim Cook had a bit of deja vu today when an analyst asked him to expound on Apple's future contributions to the TV industry.

"There's a lot we can contribute in this space so we can continue to pull the string and see where it leads us," he said during Apple's first quarter earnings call today, after remarking on the growth of sales for the Apple TV device.

The company sold more than 2 million Apple TV devices last quarter, according to Cook. This is up from 1.4 million devices from the … Read more

Apple: $7.3 billion in first-quarter sales in China

Whatever disappointment investors may have with Apple's latest earnings report, nothing could rub away the shine from the company's strong sales out of China.

Apple's sales in the "Greater China" region, encompassing China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, were $7.3 billion in the quarter, a 60 percent year-over-year increase, according to CEO Tim Cook, who spoke during a conference call today following the publication of Apple's fiscal first-quarter numbers.

"This is incredibly high," he said, adding that the comparison was even stronger than it seems at first blush, as last year's … Read more

Is this 3D-printed robot the first of thousands?

I love the one-upmanship going on in the word of 3D printing.

At CES 2013 I saw 3D-printed skateboards, flowers, and gear assemblies, and meanwhile there are now plans to print everything from body parts to buildings. So printing robots was only a matter of time.

InMoov is a full-size humanoid robot made from 3D-printed parts. Designed and built by Gael Langevin of Factices Ateliers in France, InMoov began last year as a hand, then an arm. It's now two arms and a head. … Read more

Apple CEO downplays reports of iPhone component cuts

After a week of silence, Apple has weighed in on reports that it cut orders on components for production of future iPhone. As in, it's not happy about them, but it's not about to confirm or deny them.

According to chief executive Tim Cook, the company's supply chain is "complicated," and so people shouldn't look too deeply into any one aspect of it to see the bigger picture.

"Even if a particular data point were factual, it would be impossible to interpret the data point for what it means to our overall business,&… Read more

Apple shares take a tumble after earnings report

Apple investors hoping for a nice stock boost following fiscal first-quarter earnings are likely pretty disappointed right now.

Shares, which have already been under pressure in recent weeks, slid about 10 percent in late trading after the Cupertino, Calif., electronics giants failed to post quarterly results that were as strong as hoped. Shares initially slid about 5 percent after the report, but losses accelerated during Apple's conference call.

Revenue for the first-quarter ended in January was weaker than analysts expected, as were the company's projections for second-quarter sales. And iPhone sales, while a record, also weren't quite … Read more

Apple Q1: By the numbers

Soon after being elected New York City Mayor in 1977, Ed Koch would regularly ask anyone within earshot what became his signature line while in office: How'm I doing? So with the company's fiscal first-quarter earnings now behind it, let's ask the same question about Apple.

Judge for yourself: Here is Apple's fiscal first quarter by the numbers:

$54.5 billion: Total sales.

$13.1 billion: Net income.

22.9 million iPads. That compared to 15.4 million in the year-ago quarter. However, Apple described supplies of the iPad Mini as "constrained."

Apple's monster Q1 earnings still fall short on Wall Street

Apple just reported its first quarter earnings, and they were huge, though they missed Wall Street's expectations.

The iPhone and iPad maker posted revenue of $54.5 billion and earnings of $13.1 billion, or $13.81 per share. That was just below the $54.7 billion and slightly above the earnings per share of $13.44 Wall Street was expecting, but above the $52 billion and $11.75 per share Apple forecast for itself back in October.

Apple sold 47.8 million iPhones during the quarter, which ended in December. Sales of the iPad came in at 22.… Read more
