PlayStation 3 price cut official: 60GB PS3 now just $500

Last Friday, we reported a rumor about the PS3 getting a $100 price cut, based on a Circuit City flier that's been circulating the blogs. Well, it's not a rumor anymore. Sony just confirmed that the PlayStation 3 is indeed getting getting a fair bit cheaper.

Starting this week, the 60GB PS3 will retail for $500, the same price as the now-defunct 20GB PS3. If you had your heart set on spending $600 on a PlayStation 3, have no fear; the price drop makes room for the new 80GB PS3 bundle Sony also announced today. Taking the 60GB … Read more

Pending PS3 price cut?

The Sony PlayStation 3 is an impressive piece of equipment, but its price has put off a lot of gamers. After all, $600 is a lot to sink into a video game console, even if it doubles as Blu-ray disc player. Fortunately, the PS3 might be seeing its very first price cut in a week or two.

Earlier this week, Kotaku reported a rumor that the PlayStation 3 would be getting a $100 price drop. Sony President Ryoji Chubachi said Sony has "no plans" to lower the PS3 price tag, but GameDaily said it received confirmation of the … Read more

U.S. energy bills at a 20-year high

You're not the only one paying more of your paycheck to energy bills.

Energy bills as a percentage of income in the U.S. are at their highest point since 1987, according to a report in the Christian Science Monitor. Overall, they are still below the levels seen in the 70s and early 870s, but energy bills in some low income households is approaching 10 percent.

Polls show Americans believe energy prices will continue to rise.

"If it rises much more, it will become a significant problem, particularly for lower-income households," Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody'… Read more

Sony lops $100 off Blu-ray player price tag

Well that was quick.

Back in February, Sony said the Blu-ray player to be released this summer would sell for $599. On Monday, Sony said the BDP-S300, which is now shipping, will actually sell for $499 instead. The latest version is slimmer than the original, but with many of the same features.

Considering that the original Sony Blu-ray player, the BDP-S1, was released just six months ago for $1,000, that's a pretty swift price drop. Though Sony attributed the price cut to lower production costs and higher demand for the Blu-ray technology, it's also an indication that … Read more

We have to give the folks at Vidikron a hard time about the company's announcement that its flagship front projector, the Vision Model 150, is now shipping. Make no mistake, the thing looks awesome. We're not talking about a $999.99 plasma; we're talking about the ultimate projector. So come on, guys, let's go … Read more

Sony PSP gets $30 price cut

After failing to keep up with Nintendo's DS juggernaut, Sony promised it would do a better job marketing the PSP, and now it appears that push is fully underway with a $30 price cut to the PSP Core Pack, the base system. That brings the PSP's MSRP to $169.99, or $80 less than the system's launch price of two years ago.

According to a press release that went out today, Sony's also modified the pricing structure for the system's software, with "first-party PSP software priced using a new tiered model--$39.99 (premium … Read more

For you, I make special deal: NetHaggler [corrected]

Most people (in the United States anyway) are cowed by printed price tags. We see a number stuck on an item and just assume it is the price. But in more cases than people realize, a marked price can be taken as a negotiating position. Some people dislike dickering and choose to ignore this fact. Others (you know who you are) look at financial transactions as a form of sport.

Unfortunately, the Internet is a poor arena for one-on-one shopping combat. When you see a pair of pants you like on Macys.com, you can't ask the salesperson if … Read more

Binocular-camera takes photos in 3D

For some reason we seem to be given to nostalgic references today, so we beg your indulgence. This item, for example, reminds us of the 3D-slide "View-Master" we had when we were kids.

The "StereoVision 3D VuCam" is slightly more sophisticated than what Fisher-Price had to offer. This gadget combines binocular lenses with two 3.1-megapixel cameras to take 3D photos, according to Gearfuse. You can even magnify the image first, previewing it on a pop-up LCD screen before shooting.

Now comes the tricky part--actually viewing the pictures in 3D. To see them with the naked … Read more

Sony may look to cut PS3 price

PlayStation 3 price cuts already? That's what Sony may be eyeing in a bid to break even on the console by the end of fiscal 2008.

According to the Associated Press, Sony senior vice president Takao Yuhara said that while no specific plans have been made, the company is considering reducing the price as a way to boost sales. "We may look at the price as part of our strategy to expand the market when the timing is right," Yuhara said.

Sony had already reduced the price of the PS3 in Japan prior to launch. But with … Read more
