Lenovo quarterly sales climb in weak market

Lenovo Group reported a 10.5 percent increase in its fiscal first quarter revenues, despite a weakening global economy.

The computer maker reported revenues climbed to $4.2 billion in the quarter ending June 30, up from $3.8 billion a year ago. Shipments of PCs climbed 14.6 percent for the quarter.

"Despite a softening global economy, we delivered solid gains in worldwide sales," Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo chairman, said in a statement.

Sales in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region, for example, increased by 26 percent, while Asia Pacific shipments grew 11 percent.

The Americas, however, … Read more

Photos: ThinkPad X200

It's nearly August, which means one thing: CNET Labs is drowning in back-to-school laptops. But, thanks to the launch of Intel's new Centrino 2 platform earlier this month, there are also a few new laptops for grown-ups to enjoy. One that we've had our hands on this week is Lenovo's new ultraportable, the ThinkPad X200. We took some time this afternoon to compare it with both its predecessor and the ThinkPad X300 introduced earlier this year.

We've completed performance and battery testing (battery life was especially impressive) and will post the full review of the ThinkPad X200 as soon as we can get final pricing for our configuration. Meanwhile, check out side-by-side pictures and comparisons of the ThinkPads X61s, X200, and X300 after the break.… Read more

Centrino 2 announcements galore

Last night, while the East Coast was crawling into bed and the West Coast was tucking into dessert, Intel was officially launching its new mobile platform, Centrino 2. In addition to new processors, the platform includes an 802.11n wireless card and new integrated graphics with support for high-definition content. The platform also supports graphics switching, which lets you choose between integrated graphics (for longer battery life) and discrete graphics (for better performance).

Laptop manufacturers were quick to adopt the new platform, and many took the opportunity to significantly revamp their laptop lines. For your convenience, the first five major … Read more

Intel Centrino 2 launch was not about the processor

There was relatively little said Monday at the Centrino 2 launch about new processors. Almost as little as was said about side shows such as a "Montevina" desktop design. The main attraction was the Centrino 2 chipset.

Why? There's not a whole lot that's new about the processors other than faster speeds and improved power efficiency: the new "P" series chips have a thermal envelope of 25 watts versus 35 watts for the previous generation.

The focus of the Centrino 2 launch returned repeatedly to the chipset and accompanying silicon: namely, the Intel 4 … Read more

Lenovo adds color to IdeaPads

In addition to freshening up its ThinkPad offerings, Lenovo used Monday's Centrino 2 launch to add four colorful models to its consumer IdeaPad line. Two of the new systems--the 13.3-inch IdeaPad U330 and the 14.1-inch IdeaPad Y430--are all-new form factors; the remaining two--the 15.4-inch IdeaPad Y530 and 17.1-inch IdeaPad Y730--are new iterations of previous IdeaPad models.

Building on the success of the gorgeous IdeaPad U110, the new IdeaPad U330 offers a slightly larger screen in a package that still weighs a reasonable 4 pounds and measures less than an inch thick. Unlike its smaller sibling, … Read more

Lenovo announces new small-biz laptops, updates ThinkPads

As Intel officially launched its long-awaited Centrino 2 platform, Lenovo was announcing a boatload of laptops, all of which will feature Centrino 2 components. The wave of new systems includes nine ThinkPad models: three in a brand-new SL series targeted at small and medium businesses; a new X series ultraportable; updates to the existing R series and T series; and a portable workstation in the newly minted W series.

The SL series is arguably the biggest news of the launch. Occupying the middle ground between more-corporate ThinkPads and the ultra-small-business-oriented Lenovo 3000 line, ThinkPad SL series laptops feature a glossy … Read more

Notable notebooks from the first half of 2008

We've reached the halfway mark of 2008, so let us take a look at the most noteworthy laptops we've seen thus far this year. These aren't merely the laptops that received the highest ratings from CNET Reviews, but those models that stood out from the pack by introducing a new and interesting design or feature set.

The first laptop to create a stir this year was removed from a manila envelope by Steve Jobs at MacWorld in January. The MacBook Air was notable for both its thin design and thin feature set. The Air is impossibly thin, … Read more

Lenovo takes wraps off IdeaCentre consumer desktop

Lenovo's never had a consumer desktop for the U.S. before, and you can tell by the spelling choice of the product name--IdeaCentre--that the U.S. isn't the primary market for this PC. (The company has made consumer desktops for its home market in China for several years, however.)

Nevertheless, the Chinese company is finally making good on its promise back in early January of delivering the consumer desktop PC. It was initially announced along with its much more compelling notebook cousin, the IdeaPad line, at the Consumer Electronics Show, but the company was light on details.

Backstage tech tour at the NBA Finals

LOS ANGELES--Never mind the nail-biting lead changes down the stretch, or the dazzling display put on by league MVP Kobe Bryant here at Game 3 of the NBA Finals.

Try also to forget Jack Nicholson holding court from his usual spot at Staples Center. Shrug off the fact that Sylvester Stallone, Eddie Murphy, David Beckham, and Hugh Hefner are all sitting a few feet away. One of the biggest stars in Los Angeles Tuesday night stayed quietly out of sight.

Logging the mind-boggling amount of statistics produced in a single National Basketball Association game is an intense undertaking. And the … Read more
