Unisys to take care of D-Link customers

I've reviewed multiple wireless routers from D-Link. Part of the reviewing process involves "trying out" the support service of the vendor, and so far, I've been happy with D-Link's customer support, which just got a boost.

The company on Monday announced a partnership with Unisys Corporation to power its D-Link Care Support Packages--a flexible set of hardware maintenance services.

Unisys--a global information technology services and solutions company--will provide service logistics and maintenance services for D-Link network device customers in North America. The support packages start at $49.99 and offers end-to-end networking and equipment … Read more

LinkedIn unveils Surveys business for researchers

LinkedIn on Thursday announced the launch of LinkedIn Surveys, a service from the LinkedIn Research Network that allows market researchers and investors to access the site's 30 million professionals for market intelligence by creating a survey, and either opening it up to the entire LinkedIn community or targeting a select group.

In order to increase the number of members participating in the surveys, LinkedIn will allow those who participate to choose from a variety of rewards, including gift cards from Amazon.com, Starbucks, or Best Buy. For those that don't want gift cards, LinkedIn is also offering participants … Read more

LinkedIn raises another $22.7 million

LinkedIn has raised an additional $22.7 million in funding, giving the business-networking site a little cushion in difficult economic times.

The strategic investment, announced Wednesday, comes from Goldman Sachs, SAP, McGraw-Hill, and longtime investor Bessemer Venture Partners. The money arrives on the heels of a $53 million Series D funding round in June that gave LinkedIn a valuation of $1 billion. The latest funding round brings the total funds raised to just more than $100 million.

LinkedIn CEO Dan Nye announced the funding in a blog posting on his company's site:

I'd like to reiterate our commitment … Read more

D-Link takes wireless-n access points to work

D-Link is going to the office. The company announced on Monday its first wireless-n access points for small to medium businesses. The APs offer a much larger coverage area, as well as better bandwidth, than those designed for home users.

The new APs include the AirPremier N Dual Band Access Point DAP-2590 and the Dual Band Access Point DAP-2553. They support 5GHz and 2.4GHz frequencies, as well as multiple wireless standards (a, n, and g). They also have Power over Ethernet (PoE) capability.

PoE lets the device draw power directly from the network cable and therefore be mounted where … Read more

ScreenPlay TV Link takes out the PC middleman

For those of you who want to play your multimedia files on a TV without the need to hook up it up to a PC, Iomega has a solution for you.

The ScreenPlay TV Link is a small Post-it-sized box that connects to your TV via a composite, component, or HDMI connection. You can plug any USB (FAT32 or NTFS format) drive into the device and access all of its content through an easy-to-use on-screen interface.

We were also very impressed with the various file types the TV Link is compatible with. On the audio side, you can play MP3, … Read more

Sony Bravia Internet Video Link lacks luster

The video-streaming product category is getting crowded. There's the Apple TV, Vudu, Xbox 360, Netflix Player, and PlayStation 3, not to mention the traditional video on-demand services from cable and satellite providers. Sony's Bravia Internet Video Link (also known as the BIVL) is fighting in the same space, but it starts out with one significant handicap--it only works with newer Sony Bravia LCDs.

If you don't already have a Sony Bravia LCD and don't want to buy one, don't worry about it, as you're not missing much with the BIVL. While it does differentiate … Read more

A broken link economy? Then fix it

Just as many of you settled into your seats to watch Thursday evening's debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin, Allen Stern of CenterNetworks was attracting his own crowd on Twitter after raising a question that strikes at heart of the blogosphere.

"It's clear the link economy is broken," he wrote, pointing to a write-up CNET News published on Friendster's support for Facebook applications. The piece contained nine links, six of which pointed to previous CNET posts.

Not long after, Matthew Ingram piled on with a post dinging us for attempting "to prove how … Read more

D-Link networks routers' USB ports

I reviewed D-Link's DIR-855 wireless router recently, and complained that it didn't offer NAS or print-serving capability. On Wednesday, the company fixed that by introducing the Xtreme N Dual Band Gigabit DIR-825.

Like the DIR-855, the DIR-825 is a true dual-band gigabit router, meaning it can spontaneously offer Wireless-N signals in both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. The DIR-825, however, comes with SharePort technology, which allows for turning the USB port of the router into a virtual-network USB port that supports external hard drives for NAS functionality and other USB devices, such as printers.

The new router also … Read more

Intel WiMax to go live, will devices follow?

Intel's WiMax wireless technology will finally be unleashed in two weeks. But it's not clear how big a following the technology has among device makers.

Intel and Sprint Nextel will team up to launch the first WiMax network in Baltimore on October 8--what the chipmaker is calling the dawn of 4G broadband because of its high speed.

Sprint will likely announce the rollout next week at WiMax World in Chicago, according to sources familiar with the plans. Sprint's WiMax-based broadband service, called XOHM, is scheduled to go live by the end of this month, according to those … Read more
