Ice Energy said on Monday it has partnered with data center cooling company Data Aire to make a hybrid air conditioner that uses ice for efficient cooling.
The idea behind Ice Energy's Ice Bear air conditioner is to make ice in a storage tank during off-peak times to take advantage of lower rates. The machine uses the stored ice to make cool air during times of higher energy demand--and higher rates.
Ice Energy and Data Aire said they have tested a way to link the Ice Bear to Data Aire's cooling systems. The companies said that the combination … Read more
A new study from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) has found that Greenland's melting ice may have a greater effect on sea level rise on the northeastern coasts of the U.S. and Canada than previously hypothesized.
"If Greenland's ice melts at moderate to high rates, ocean circulation by 2100 may shift and cause sea levels off the northeast coast of North America to rise by about 12 to 20 inches (about 30 to 50 centimeters) more than in other coastal areas. The research builds on recent reports that have found that sea level rise … Read more
During hot weather, I drink iced tea by the gallon. I used to press my coffeemaker into service to brew enough iced tea during the summer, but between the odd after taste and the fact that I couldn't really control the strength of the tea, I decided I needed a dedicated tea maker. The Iced Tea Maker from Back to Basics is ideal for the purpose: it was designed with brewing tea in mind and offers several features that will help you to that end. One of my favorites is the tea brew-strength selector: I happen to like my … Read more
Ice cream is a selfish treat. After all, when it comes down to it, other than dogs, babies, and very significant others, nobody wants to share that cone with you anyway. Even if one were so inclined, the issue of flavor would most certainly come up. This is why we have stores dedicated to giving us picky consumers dozens of flavor options. But what of homemade ice cream? If you enjoy making ice cream at home, somebody has to decide what flavor to make. Most ice cream machines can only handle one flavor at a time, so somebody has to … Read more
In spring and summer, drinks taste much better when they're icy cold, and manufacturers have come up with a vast array of ice shapes to add into your juice pitchers.
What I haven't seen yet, however, is anything like this tray of Ice Kabobs. Made out of silicone, it makes three kabobs out of ice in fun strings of shapes. You can use them as swizzle sticks for a party, cold spears in a water pitcher, or simply as an addition to your own personal glass when you're trying to cool off at home.
The Ice Kabob … Read more
Admit it. Go on, admit it. You always wanted an ice sculpture centerpiece. I know I have. I'm not ashamed to admit it. An ice sculpture may be cheesy or fancy depending on your perspective (not to mention the sculpture), but there is no denying there is something just kind of neat about watching an ice sculpture slowly melt before your eyes. With little or no work, you can now have your very own ice sculpture (over and over again).
These Ice Sculpture Molds, available in Penguin or Angelfish, may not be the high art ice sculpture you would … Read more
By now you've heard of "ICE," right? The idea is to add an "In Case of Emergency" entry to your phone's address book and fill it with emergency contacts, important medical info, and the like. That's so rescue workers have an easier time helping you should the unfortunate need arise.
ICE Lite is ICE in app form. It contains just two screens: one with personal info (name, address, phone number, etc.), and one with emergency-contact info.
There's room for your emergency contact person's name, relation, and phone number, along with separate … Read more
Arctic sea ice is not only shrinking in coverage area; it's also thinning, according to a report and satellite images jointly released on Monday by NASA and the NASA-supported National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado.
The Arctic basin is covered in a thick semipermanent sea ice, which is covered in thin seasonal ice caps that are built up each winter, only to melt away again each summer.
The 2009 Arctic summer-melting season is starting out with a substantial amount of thin seasonal ice and an unusually small amount of the thick sea ice, making … Read more
Ice cream lovers are well accustomed to indecision. A seemingly endless range of flavors exist solely to confuse the eater. Well, perhaps this variety isn't designed to confuse, but it can sure make choosing a flavor difficult. Clearly, flavors like Neapolitan with its triple flavor combination are a direct result of consumer confusion. Quite often, having more of any particular item is a good thing; in the case of ice cream, having more is always a good thing.
