Car Tech tour of CES 2009

Still in set-up phase, we take a tour of the Automotive Technology hall at CES 2009. Amid customized cars being driven slowly through the booths and audio engineers testing the sound output of demonstration stereos, speakers, and amps, we snapped pictures to give you an idea of what's in store for cars at CES this year.

Audiovox, PlayStation 2 roll out

The immortal PlayStation 2 undergoes yet another transformation, this time courtesy of Audiovox. This almost 9-year-old system is now officially going on the road. You may have seen a PlayStation 2 in a car before, but not like this.

The premier model is an all-in-one overhead unit that appears to look like an in-car DVD system but with the inner working of a PS2. Additional features include accessories such as a 16-channel wireless FM modulator, full color 16:9 wide screen, 10.2-inch display, two wireless game controllers, two fold-flat wireless IR headphones, and a wireless DVD remote control.

HD Radio: Why should you care?

HD Radio enables AM and FM radio stations to broadcast both digital and analog audio from the same channel, as well as add new sub-channels and text information. HD Radio has been on the market since 2002, and yet--over six years later--we're only just beginning to see the technology proliferate. Currently, there are only a handful of car stereo receivers that have HD Radio tuning built in, with the bulk of the units on the market requiring external, and at times expensive, add-on tuners.

So, why doesn't anyone seem to care about HD Radio? Most likely, it's … Read more

Mercedes SplitView tech is two screens in one

A dash-mounted LCD is the perfect spot for viewing a movie during a long road trip if you're a front-seat passenger, but a movie playing right there in the driver's periphery could prove too much of a distraction for the driver. Mercedes may have come up with a solution to this problem with its SplitView technology.

Essentially, the SplitView tech is a special screen in the dash that allows the driver and front passenger to view two different programs at the same time. While the driver is checking the navigation instructions, the front passenger can sit back and … Read more

How-to: Basic car stereo installation

Installing a car stereo can be a scary thing, but with a little preparation and patience it doesn't have to be difficult at all. In this photo slide show, we show you how to handle what is usually the first, and most basic, upgrade to a car's audio system: installing a new receiver.

While the details of car stereo installation may vary from vehicle to vehicle and between different receiver models, the basics are typically the same. Most installs only require simple hand tools, with the only special items necessary being a wire stripper.

For purposes of this … Read more
