Google Street View blamed for burglary

In the week in which Google CEO Eric Schmidt has said his company is now "paranoid" about security (not an advert for Chrome at all), a lone milkman in the UK has expressed a paranoia that seems to have been dismissed by the great search engine in the sky (and on the ground).

Gordon Rayner is a 54-year-old man without a mountain bike.

He used to have a mountain bike, but, according to the Telegraph, Rayner says Google's infinitely discreet Street View cameras published a picture of it to the world--which includes the underworld. The cameras happened … Read more

Korea cuts off kids' online gaming at midnight

When I first heard about this, I wanted to believe it was about teeth.

Mine were still chattering from a piece of research performed by the University of Iowa that suggested that young gamers enjoyed more cavities. I experienced a severe attack of lockjaw, however, at the news that Korea--that's the nice Korea without the strange leader with dead Elvis' hair-- has imposed a nighttime ban on certain online games.

It seems, though, that the Korean government is less concerned about young gamers' molars and more concerned about their deep-seated obsession with being deep seated in their bedrooms into … Read more

Should Apple ads now target Google?

The idea in life, unless you're Brett Favre or Kate Gosselin, is to quit while you're ahead. So Justin Long's revelation that the "Get a Mac" campaign might be done suggests that Apple might think it's sufficiently far ahead of Microsoft for arms to be laid down and fingers to be wrapped around a peace bong. Well, almost.

Now the real battle, the one for hearts and minds, is supposedly between Google and Apple. It's a battle in which Apple, naturally, goes for hearts, while Google tries to impress minds. It's a … Read more

Curriculum teaches digital literacy and citizenship

commentary In my more than 15 years in the Internet safety field, I've seen a lot of programs designed to teach children how to use the Internet safely, but many have missed the mark because they too often focus on children as victims or at least passive consumers rather than as participants in our digital culture. But in this Web 2.0 world, kids aren't just consuming media, they're creating it and they have collectively embraced social media as a part of their lives. They don't go online; they are online--whether on a PC, a mobile … Read more

Twitter proposal leads to tweeted wedding

They sat up in bed on their wedding night and followed the progress of the hashtag they had created on Twitter. But before we focus on the romantic part of Greg and Stephanie Rewis' wedding, let us pause for a moment to consider how they got to the altar.

"Once it got going, it felt like the most natural thing in the world," Stephanie Rewis told CBS News.com.

Yes, yes. But wait a minute. Let's focus on how Twitter got involved in their mutual involvement. Two years ago, Greg Rewis and then Stephanie Sullivan, both deeply … Read more

Let's not create a cyberbullying panic

Recent stories in the press about teenage cyberbullying and real-world bullying are sickening. It's hard to know how much cyberbullying contributed to her decision to kill herself, but the case of Phoebe Prince brings tears to my eyes. The South Hadley, Mass., 15-year-old was reportedly the brunt of repeated cruelty at the hands of classmates (six of whom are now facing criminal charges) until she put an end to her life.

There is also the recent cyberbullying case of Alexis Pilkington, a 17-year-old girl from Long Island, N.Y., who committed suicide last month after being taunted with cruel … Read more

Is Conan using Twitter to sell himself to Fox?

I don't know who decided that when it comes to the time for a brandy and toke, every American TV should feature a middle-age man with difficult hair sitting behind a desk.

Perhaps it was a middle-aged man with difficult hair who spends his whole day sitting behind a desk.

However, Conan O'Brien, he who made so many feel sad that he was being given a lot of money not to work, seems to have decided that he will become America's most future-focused, Web-aware middle-aged man who sits behind a desk.

Conan first wafted onto Twitter in FebruaryRead more

Son plans to sue mother over Facebook interference

When your mom asks to become your Facebook friend, it can feel like that time when she insisted on standing in the corner, sipping a nonalcoholic drink, at your high school dance.

A teenager in Arkansas, however, has become so annoyed with his mother's Facebook intrusion that he has reportedly decided to sue her for harassment.

According to KATV-TV, the 16-year-old son of Denise New from Arkadelphia claims that she hacked into his Facebook account, changed his password, and even posted things about him that were slanderous.

New told KATV: "You're within your legal rights to monitor … Read more

Why Facebook is for haters

It's time to be honest.

What are you really feeling when you're on Facebook, poring over every vacation picture of that Martha you dated in high school? Are you inspired with touchy-feely interest in your fellow woman? Or is there something a little more corrosive burning your bones?

I ask because I was edified into indigestion by a piece of research from the University of Missouri School of Journalism that suggested humans might be, surprisingly, horrible little drama queens. "Emotional Responses During Social Information Seeking on Facebook" does for the human condition what "Jersey Shore&… Read more

AOL: Bebo not worth investment, will be sold or closed

AOL confirmed Tuesday that social-networking site Bebo will either be sold or shuttered, a victim of a highly competitive landscape and a parent company that doesn't want to invest to compete. The company will determine its fate by the end of May.

AOL, then part of Time Warner, bought Bebo for $850 million in March 2008 but struggled to build a name for itself outside of the U.K., where it's one of the most popular social-networking sites. In the U.S., it never really gained any traction. In a memo to employees, the company said:

"Bebo, … Read more
