Keep tabs on your tabs

We love tabbed browsing, but we often find ourselves with tons of tabs open. Sometimes they're simply things we forgot to close when we were done with them, but other times they contain pages that we want to return to. TooManyTabs for Chrome is a clever browser extension that helps you hang on to the tabs you're not done with without all the clutter.

TooManyTabs isn't the most intuitive application we've ever used, but after a bit of experimentation, it was pretty easy to figure out. It appears as an icon to the right of Chrome'… Read more

Sync with Weave still imperfect

There are several excellent bookmark-syncing extensions for Firefox, but Weave is the first major effort designed by Mozilla. The newest version of Weave is out of beta and supports more than just bookmark sync. It also supports syncing open tabs, history, passwords, preferences, and Firefox 3's advanced Location Bar data.

The add-on lives in your tools menu, in your Options menu, and in a Status Bar icon. From clicking on any of them, you can check your syncing log, create a user account and password, and toggle sync settings. The default is to sync all, but choosing the customization … Read more

Sync with Weave

There are several excellent bookmark-syncing extensions for Firefox, but Weave is the first one designed by Mozilla. As you might expect from the company that produces Firefox itself, the appeal of Weave is that it synchronizes more than just bookmarks, and also supports syncing open tabs, history, passwords, preferences, and Firefox 3's advanced Location Bar data.

The add-on lives in your Tools menu and in your Options menu. From there you can check your syncing log, create a user account and password, and toggle sync settings. The default is to sync all. But in practice, Weave has had a … Read more

Sync Chrome's tabs via FreshStart

The name's a bit hard to figure out, but FreshStart delivers to Google Chrome the long-overdue child of tabbed browsing and browsing sessions: tab synchronization. Fast and functional, FreshStart takes a little bit of effort to set up, but the workflow is simple enough that most users should be able to pick it up after one try.

When the extension is installed, it tries to open a welcome page, but that failed for us on both test computers. Close it out and go to your Tools menu, and enable bookmark sync. This will require a Google account, and if … Read more

Give tabs a FreshStart in Chrome

Ever since the invention of tabbed browsing and browsing sessions, we've been waiting for their long-overdue child: fast and functional tab synchronization. FreshStart brings that feature to Google Chrome as a surprisingly zippy extension. FreshStart's workflow isn't necessarily intuitive, but most users should be able to pick it up after one try.

When the extension is installed, it tries to open a welcome page, but that failed for us on both test computers. Close it out and go to your Tools menu, and enable bookmark sync. This will require a Google account, and if bookmark sync isn'… Read more

How to build a futuristic Firefox (video)

Take two new add-ons, judiciously use some pre-existing extensions, and creatively apply built-in tweaks, and you can make Firefox 3.6 look like Firefox 3.7 or even Firefox 4.0. In this How-To video from CNET TV, I'll take you through the steps explained in this blog post from last week. The process isn't hard, and can be good for getting more familiar with the deep level of customization available in Firefox.

Firefox gets a visit from the future

Thanks to a teenage Firefox aficionado from Tasmania, Australia, you can make your Firefox 3.5 or 3.6 look like mock-ups we've seen for Firefox 3.7 and Firefox 4.0.

To get a peek at one potential future for Firefox, install the Strata40 theme and the experimental StrataBuddy add-on. Like one of those classic Superman comics that had Supermen from across time teaming up to defeat a dastardly villain, the add-on provides the interface tweaks while the theme gives Firefox the look you're looking for. Several other add-ons are also recommended to complete the experience: AppTabs, … Read more

Keep those tabs private

What do you do with your tabs if a friend, family member, or boss wants to borrow your computer? How do you play it cool and hide tabs you don't want them to see? HideTab can help you out.

You can very quickly hide one or all open tabs with a keyboard shortcut or right-click contextual menu. This means the tabs can't be seen both along the top of your browser, and in the list of open sites. Instead, you can only see what you've hidden in a small, and subtle pop-up menu that sits in the … Read more

Why to embrace Firefox 3.6's new-tab ethos

Sometimes it's the little things that count.

The most prominent feature of Firefox 3.6 is Personas, which let you reskin the browser with thousands of different looks. But my single favorite change is a subtler change to the open-source browser's user interface.

Specifically, when you open a link in a new tab, it appears immediately to the right of the active tab. Before, the new tabs would appear to the far right of the strip of tabs.

Yup, that's it. For those of us who spend hours a day in a browser, though, the new tab … Read more
