Canon makes real on 800mm f/5.6 and 200mm f/2 lenses

While prototypes were on display at the PhotoPlus Expo last fall, Canon has finally made the massive EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM and EF200mm f/2L IS USM lenses a reality. Both lenses carry Canon's L moniker and sport the putty colored finish that demark the cream of Canon's crop. Both lenses include Canon's optical image stabilization, as well as fluorite and UD (ultra low dispersion) lens elements to combat chromatic aberration, and includes moisture and dust resistant seals.

Compared to Canon's old EF200 f/1.8L USM, the new EF200 f/2 sacrifices a … Read more

Three new Fujifilm superzooms

Catering to people who want SLR-style bodies and a wide range of features, but don't want to deal with interchangeable lenses, Fujifilm has announced three new superzoom models in its S-series line of cameras. The flagship is the 11-megapixel FinePix S100FS, which sports a 14.3x optical, 28-400mm f/2.8-5.3 Fujinon zoom lens, sensitivity up to ISO 3,200 at full resolution (or ISO 6,400 at 6MP, or ISO 10,000 at 3MP), and a tilting 2.5-inch 230,000-dot LCD screen.

As you'd expect in a camera of this level, the S100FS includes a … Read more

Fujifilm F100fd: longer lens, higher sensitivity, Face Detection 3.0

One of the hidden gems in Fujifilm's compact camera line has always been its F series cameras, which offer high sensitivity, manual exposure controls, and a conveniently small form factor. New to the line this year is the F100fd, which carries on the long tradition boasting a sensitivity of ISO 3,200 at its full resolution of 12 megapixels, as well as ISO 6,400 with resolution limited to 6MP, and ISO 12,800 if you don't mind being limited to 3MP. Fuji has also extended the zoom range, with a 5X optical, 28-140mm f/3.3-5.1 … Read more

Sony T300 separates the adults from the children

Following up on its current top T-series camera, the Cyber-shot DSC-T200, Sony has announced the Cyber-shot DSC-T300. Resolution has been pushed up to 10.1-megapixels, but the other main specs have remained the same. The T300 sports a 5X optical, 33-165mm f/3.5-4.4 zoom lens, 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD, and has optical image stabilization and a top sensitivity of ISO 3,200.

New to this camera, and some of Sony's other new compacts, are a handful of features aimed at dealing with common, though tricky, shooting situations. Cutest among these is an update to the Smile Shutter … Read more

Gateway catches up to the notebook design bandwagon

Welcome, Gateway!

So, you're doing the colored/crazy-designed notebook thing now, huh? Yeah, so is, well, everyone else.

It's pretty well-established now that the masses see their computer as an extension of their personalities. First, it was the brightly hued notebook trend that all the top-tier PC makers were latching on to, including Gateway. Now as a laptop vendor, it seems you have to offer some artsy-looking version of a standard notebook to even get noticed anymore. (With the exception of Apple, which garners plenty of attention with its commitment to minimalism.)

Cases in point: Sony, which already … Read more

Funai announces Blu-ray player for less than $300

The major gripe against Blu-ray has always been that the hardware is just too expensive, especially when $99 HD DVD players were flying off the shelves at Wal-Mart a few months ago. While videophiles on a budget could opt for the $400 Sony PlayStation3, there hasn't been a real alternative for those looking for a cheaper standalone unit. Funai is looking to fill this gap with its latest announcement of a Blu-ray player slated to come in the second quarter of 2008 for less than $300--which is the lowest price we've seen on any Blu-ray player.

JVC P-Series TVs include built-in iPod dock

There are plenty of docks and cables designed to let you play back your iPod videos on your TV, but JVC's new P-Series cuts out the middleman by integrating the iPod dock directly into the TV. The four LCD flat-panels--LT-32P679 (32-inch 1366x768 screen), LT-42P789 (42-inch 1080p), LT-47P789 (47-inch 1080p), and LT-52P789 (52-inch 1080p)--each feature a flip-down iPod dock built into the bezel directly below the screen's center. And while I was ready to dismiss the whole thing as a gimmick along the lines of ViewSonic's ill-conceived VX2245wm monitor, JVC seems to have included some well-thought-out features to maximize the iPod experience. To quote the press release: … Read more

TiVo and cable industry unveil Switched Digital Video workaround

As of the most recent software update (9.2), TiVo's added quite a few fixes to its high-def DVRs: the Series3 and the TiVo HD now offer the TiVo To Go, Multi-Room Viewing, Rhapsody, and expandable storage features that were originally promised. Now it appears that TiVo has solved the other big sticking point: compatibility with Switched Digital Video (SDV) technology. The company announced today that it's developed (with the help of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association) an add-on USB adapter that will enable its two high-def DVRs to properly tune cable channels being broadcast with SDV … Read more

More software upgrades on the way for HD TiVos

It looks as if TiVo is finally beginning to roll out some long-promised software upgrades to its high-def DVRs, the TiVo HD and TiVo Series3. Hot on the heels of last week's 9.1 software upgrade (which enabled support for Rhapsody's subscription music service), some users are already getting an upgrade to version 9.2. In addition to improving the Amazon Unbox viewing experience, the latest upgrade is said to add support for connecting external eSATA hard drives, thus expanding the number of recordable hours of TV--a feature promised when those DVRs were first released. TiVo's remaining … Read more
