Motorola Droid X unveiled, 'made for video'

NEW YORK--Google CEO Eric Schmidt made a guest appearance at a press conference here Wednesday where Google, Motorola, and Verizon Wireless unveiled the new version of the popular Android Droid smartphone.

Schmidt took the stage first and touted the importance of the smartphone category.

"This is not a toy or app engine," he said. "It is a powerful kind of operating system. What is happening now is that people are thinking mobile first instead of desktop first."

Motorola Droid X officially unveiled

NEW YORK--Motorola and Verizon are set to introduce the latest member of the Droid army on Wednesday. The carrier has already let the identity of the phone out of the bag by posting a teaser site for the Droid X, as well as a YouTube video.

From these two things, we know a few details about the device--4.3-inch screen, HDMI output, 720p video capture--but soon we'll get the full rundown. We're at the event now and will be providing updates (we won't be doing a play-by-play live blog) throughout the press conference.

Adobe moves mobile Flash from rhetoric to reality

After enduring months of scorn from Apple, Adobe Systems is set to begin a major effort to claim some of the mobile computing initiative for itself starting Monday night.

That's when the company plans to issue an all-but-finished beta of Flash Player 10.1, moving from demos and rhetoric to a more concrete answer to those who question the technology's relevance. Flash for Android phones will become final with Google's imminent release of Android 2.2, aka Froyo, and over coming months Flash 10.1 will spread to many other mobile operating systems.

Motorola updates chart for Android upgrades

Motorola recently updated its owner's forum to let customers know when to expect Android 2.1 for their handsets. Aside from the Droid rollout back in March, not much has changed here in the United States since that last time we checked the forum.

That list, however, has grown considerably longer with the addition of new Moto models. As the Backflip, Dext, and Quench hit carriers across the globe, Motorola is beginning to evaluate when an upgrade would be feasible.

Well, this certainly takes some of the mystery out of the June 23 event, but now we know that Verizon's next Droid model will be the Droid X. The carrier posted a teaser site for the handset on Thursday morning with some little nuggets of information. Well, well, well, look what just arrived in my in-box.

Verizon Wireless has just sent out invites for a press event on Wednesday, June 23, at which it will unveil its next Droid device, and judging by the speakers list--Google Vice President of Engineering Andy Rubin, Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha, and Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen--it looks like it we'll see the debut of the Droid 2 running on Android 2.2.

Verizon Wireless and Motorola are in what appear to be the final stages of preparation for their next handset releases. According to Boy Genius Report, the Droid X will surface sometime in July, with the Droid 2 bowing a month later. Both phones could steal the spotlight back from HTC's Evo.
