MSN launches personal health management service

MSN this week released its beta version of a new online health information management service, including widgets to upload and organize data stored in HealthVault accounts.

MSN describes My Health Info (requires Silverlight) as a feature designed for busy parents, adults managing aging parents, and anyone managing chronic conditions and multiple medications.

That's a wide net to cast, and I say it's about time that those storing data in Microsoft's HealthVault have online access to their own, well, vaults. For years people have been able to access e-mail, financial, and other accounts online, and even aggregate that … Read more

If you're not familiar with Seagate's all newBlackArmor NAS servers, there's another network storage option for your business that's a little more commonplace.

The new NAS server, called the ReadyNAS NVX, is designed for homes and small businesses. According to Netgear, the device offers double the performance of previous NV+ units and supports file and application services for Windows, Unix/Linux, and Mac systems, including Time Machine … Read more

Amazon caters to long tail with out-of-print CDs

Every now and then, the traditional record industry comes up with a win-win for all involved. Take for example today's announcement from Amazon.com of a new service called Back from the Vault, which offers out-of-print albums for sale as CDs or MP3s.

The key to the program is Amazon subsidiary CreateSpace, which manufacturers individual CDs as users demand them--very similar to part of the service Audiolife provides for independent musicians. (CreateSpace also lets musicians self-publish, and provides similar services for books and video.) In this case, more than 20 record labels have contracted with CreateSpace to make more … Read more

Secure file encryption

NokVault offers untraceable file encryption storage. Though it took us a little time to get used to navigating the program, we found that it offers reliable and safe file protection.

When you first install the program, you're asked to enter your e-mail address for password retrieval. You'll need the password to get in and out of the program. The user interface is broken down into eight categories for accessing your vault and any files in the vault, and managing your keys and program configurations. It looked simple at first, but we had to spend a little time getting … Read more

Netgear's ReadyNAS Vault taps into cloud storage

Having your network storage device automatically back up data onto a remote server is a great idea, and so far I've seen it implemented only by Datto. But given the increasingly popularity of cloud NAS, this won't be for long.

Netgear decided to join this small crowd Monday by introducing its new online backup and disaster recovery service, called ReadyNAS Vault, for consumers and small to medium-size businesses (SMBs).

The ReadyNAS Vault is designed to be a simple, enterprise-class solution for Internet- or "cloud-based" data protection and will be available for all versions of Netgear's family of ReadyNAS products.

ReadyNAS Vault will be built right into all ReadyNAS servers. Consumers then can regularly and securely copy data to a remote storage facility and recover or access data from anywhere in the world via the Internet.

The new solution also allows for managing multiple individual ReadyNAS servers and a centralized online console. Users can do this regardless of where they are, as long as they have access to the Internet.… Read more

Black Hat says 'canceled' Apple talk never existed

This post has been updated with Charles Edge's response.

LAS VEGAS--On the eve of this year's Black Hat Briefings here, officials disputed a researcher's claim that his talk had to be canceled. They say the talk never even existed.

Last Thursday, researcher Charles Edge told Brian Krebs of The Washington Post that a talk on a previously disclosed flaw within the encryption for Apple FileVault had to be canceled because of a signed agreement with Apple.

The story had the individuals at Black Hat who handle the Call for Papers--the process by which a researcher submits a … Read more

SmugMug goes after prosumer photags with SmugVault

SmugMug, a photo host geared toward prosumer and professional photographers, launched a new service Monday called SmugVault.

As the name would suggest it's all about storage, but not just for the standard slew of files you'll see supported on sites like Flickr or Google's Picasa. Instead, SmugVault is all about the files professional or advanced users end up with, like the RAW and TIFF files from high-end digital SLRs, and the PDF and PSD files from post-processing.

The service is tapping into Amazon.com's S3 cloud storage to serve up all that space, and offering users … Read more
