Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G now up for preorder

The 4G-capable Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is now available for preorder.

Customers interested in buying the device can head to Verizon's Web site and preorder the 16GB or 32GB models for $529.99 and $629.99, respectively. To buy the device at those prices, however, consumers must enter into a two-year contract with Verizon.

Samsung's Android Honeycomb-based Galaxy Tab features a 10.1-inch display and a dual-core 1GHz processor. The device includes both a front- and rear-facing camera so users can snap photos and have video chats. Samsung currently offers a Wi-Fi-only version of the tablet for $499.99 and $599.99 for the 16GB and 32GB models, respectively.

Verizon's preorder offer is a little late. Earlier this month, Verizon announced that it would start offering preorders on the 4G-capable Galaxy Tab 10.1 on June 8.

According to Verizon, the 4G Galaxy Tab 10.1 will start shipping in four to six weeks.… Read more

DisplayMate puts tablet screens in their place

I love conducting in-depth analysis of technology; however, the problem with such analytic endeavors is that the deeper you go, the more time it takes to reach your goal.

This is why I'm always impressed with the abyssal depths of analysis DisplayMate's Ray Soneira travels when he covers display quality. In his latest article, the man gets downright subterranean.

Soneira takes the iPad 2, Xoom, and Asus Transformer and completely scrutinizes their screens on the basis of brightness, contrast, color quality, screen reflectiveness, viewing angle, and backlight power consumption. That's pretty much anything and everything important when … Read more

After Apple, Samsung, Acer vie for No. 2 tablet spot

After undisputed tablet market leader Apple, Samsung and Acer are vying for the No. 2 tablet slot worldwide, according to market researcher DisplaySearch.

While Apple shipped about 4.7 million 10-inch class tablets last quarter, Samsung is shaping up to be the closest competitor at about 850,000 units shipped worldwide in the same quarter, according to Richard Shim of DisplaySearch, which pegs its numbers to vendors' public statements.

Close on Samsung's heels is Acer. The new kid on the block, Acer appears to be making gains with its 10.1-inch Iconia Tab A500 tablet. Acer has shipped 800,… Read more

The iPad is the tablet market, for now

Confusion continues to be the rule rather than the exception for the Android tablet buying experience at stores in the U.S. That will keep Apple in control of the tablet market for the foreseeable future.

That lede may rankle Android enthusiasts. But let me begin with a vignette that illustrates the confusion that prevails with tablets other than the iPad.

A few tech blogs posted headlines on Thursday and Friday proclaiming that the Motorola Xoom had dropped to $500 at Costco.

I decided to swing by my local Costco in suburban Los Angeles Friday night to verify this, since … Read more

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 review: Best Android tablet so far

I posted a full review of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 last week. Today, the tablet finally goes on sale nationwide. On Thursday, I posted a comparison blog and video featuring the Tab 10.1 and the iPad 2.

Sure, that's a lot of coverage, but what do you expect for what some highly astute individuals are calling the iPad 2 of Honeycomb tablets? The Tab 10.1 is the closest any other vendor has come to matching Apple's thin, elegant iPad 2 design.

Also, the device is one of the first to use Samsung's new … Read more

Apple iPad 2 vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1: Performance speeds

Can the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 best the iPad 2 in my grueling performance speed tests? Read on to find out. And please check out the full review of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 for more of an all-encompassing view of what it has to offer.

Once again, I take you into the murky bowels of CNET Labs to deliver hard-hitting performance test results for tablets. Well, I guess "hard-hitting" is a relative term. Let's try "light-touching." I guess I'd just like to avoid getting raked over the coals for promising too much, because if I've learned anything from Scotty from "Star Trek," it's to never overpromise. Actually, he was more of an underpromiser, but I shouldn't take my humility too far, lest it come back to take a significant chunk out of my backside. So, we'll go with "moderate-groping." Moderate-groping test results! Yes, that sounds appropriate.… Read more

American Airlines adds Android in the sky

American Airlines gave Android a sky-high boost earlier this month when it started offering the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 as an entertainment device for first-class passengers.

American will deploy 6,000 Galaxy Tabs on Boeing 767 flights between New York's JFK airport and Los Angeles, JFK and San Francisco, and Miami and Los Angeles. Passengers also will find the device on 767 aircraft serving South America and Boeing 757 aircraft flying between Boston and Los Angeles.

Besides replacing American's current entertainment system, the Wi-Fi-enabled tablets also will offer passengers Internet access during flights for an additional fee. … Read more

Buzz Out Loud 1481: Worms in spaaaaace! (Podcast)

On today's show, "worms from hell" a mile or more underground. We get a look at Windows 8 and we dig it, a lot. Google says a Chinese hacker got into hundreds of Gmail accounts, which China (not surprisingly) denies. Plus, Molly gets a new boyfriend to take to the bunker (which gets grilled cheese sandwiches in addition to its chicken and Gaga), and we get schooled on matters of space shuttle transportation.

Verizon to offer 4G-enabled Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Just a couple of days ago, J.K. Shin, Samsung's president of mobile communications, said an LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 was in the works for later this year, but it looks like it's going to be sooner rather than later.

Verizon Wireless announced today that it will start taking preorders for the 4G Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 on June 8. The carrier will offer a 16GB version for $529.99 and a 32GB for $629.99 but did not specify when the tablets would ship or be available in stores.

The Honeycomb-based … Read more
