Simple stickies

Whereas people used to--and often still do--cover their desks with sticky notes, it's now possible to put virtual sticky notes on your computer's desktop as well. Efficient Sticky Notes is an easy way to post reminders to yourself where you're sure to see them.

Efficient Sticky Note's interface is attractive and intuitive, reminding us quite a bit of Microsoft Outlook. Previews of the notes are displayed in an upper pane, while a lower pane shows the full body of a selected note. Users can choose whether or not they want each note to appear on the … Read more

WHDI to change indoor entertainment big-time

There are currently a few ways to display a computer's screen on the big TV wirelessly, including Intel's WiDi (which is part of Wi-Fi Plus), WHDI, and the upcoming 60Ghz Wi-Fi.

I've always been skeptical about the viability of these solutions when it comes to displaying high-def and interactive content, especially after seeing how Netgear's Push2TV, which is based on Intel's WiDi technology, shows a significant amount of lag, making it impossible to play games.

However, Amimon's recent demonstration proved that WHDI could seriously change the way we think about indoor entertainment. Amimon is … Read more

Web slinging on the iPhone

Spider-Man: Total Mayhem brings the famed comic-book web slinger to the touch screen with a high-action oriented game that's fun, though a bit mindless. The controls include a directional joypad on the left and buttons for jumping, attacking, and web skills on the right. You'll also be presented with extra buttons under specific circumstances, like when Spider-man uses his "Spidey sense" to get the jump on bad guys, for example. You also have a super move that can only be used once you fill up an action bar, dealing big damage using multiple hits and kicks. … Read more

Survival of the baddest

BloodnGuns is a top-down, dual-stick arcade shooter with quick controls, a simple but fun set of power-ups and weapons, and an almost comically bloody backdrop.

The aptly named BloodnGuns has no back-story, but the quasi-apocalyptic setting has you running and gunning against huge hordes of skeletons and zombies--specifically, zombies wielding enormous Final Fantasy-style swords. Your weapons range from the nondescript but fantastic (e.g., fusion, plasma, and pulse rifles) to the mundane and weirdly specific (e.g., Benelli M4 shotguns and M4A1 carbines). The gameplay is as straightforward as the interface: a virtual joystick under your left thumb controls movement, … Read more

Nyko to release PS3 controller laid out like a 360's

Nyko had another solid showing at last month's E3 2010 expo in Los Angeles, but we're really intrigued by its debut of a wireless controller with an analog stick configuration similar to that found on the Xbox 360 controller.

The Raven wireless PS3 controller will come in two styles. The first will emulate the PS3's conventional side-by-side thumbstick design, while the other swaps the D-pad with the left stick--just like Microsoft's Xbox 360 controller layout.

While the never-ending debate over which system has the superior input device will go on forever, this will be the best chance PS3 owners will have to get an idea of what it's like using the Xbox's configuration on their own console. We'll be sure to update this post with a price tag when we get one.

A deeper look at the Nyko fall lineup includes a few PlayStation Move charging solutions and an inexpensive wired PS3 "core" controller. We've got pictures of the rest of these products after the jump.… Read more

Dual-stick geometric shooter

AbstractWar is a fast-paced, top-view, vector-graphics-based arcade shooter, with multiplayer options over Bluetooth.

AbstractWar gives you several interface options, for both your POV and controls, and none of them is particularly good: in the game's Options page (in Spanish only), you can switch between virtual joysticks or accelerometer control (tilting your device to move), and you can choose from various views, including always-centered and stationary ("Classico") modes. "Classico" is often easier because you can see all your enemies, but if you're using virtual joysticks (which are more responsive and reliable than the accelerometer controls) … Read more

A greener nonstick option

I'm gradually making my family more eco-friendly, one reusable bag at a time. We've switched from paper to cloth napkins, and we no longer buy paper towels at all. I'm looking for new cookware right now to replace some of my aging pieces, and I wanted to find out about eco-friendlier options. One name I came across is Ecolution, featuring Hydrolon nonstick coating.

Like Teflon, Hydrolon is a multilayer nonstick material. But here's how the two materials are different: Teflon is applied using PFOA, or pertfluorooctanoic acid, a surfactant used to make certain fluoropolymer dispersions. What … Read more

Man swallows flash drive, charged with obstruction

Think of the worst thing you have ever swallowed. Haggis, perhaps? Maybe pig's ear? Arguments you have swallowed don't count.

You see, I want to get you into the appropriate mood for the story of Florin Necula. Necula seems to have gotten himself into a bothersome situation with the upstanding members of our Secret Service.

According to the Smoking Gun, they thought he might have been involved in an ingenious, if somewhat illegal, technological exercise, whereby he and several co-defendants used card readers to gain magnetic-strip information from cards that had been inserted into ATM machines.

The agents arrested him and took him to a Secret Service office in Brooklyn. U.S District Court filings allege that peculiar things ensued there. The most peculiar involved one of the pieces of evidence--a Kingston flash drive.

Agent Joseph Borger (no relation to Lucretia) said that Necula "grabbed Subject Flash Drive 2, which had been on his person at the time of his arrest, and swallowed."

I have never swallowed a flash drive. I imagine it to be worse than swallowing, say, a sock. At least the sock would go soft, whereas the flash drive would surely scratch the epiglotis.

Once you've swallowed it, however, I imagine your insides don't make like a happy pinball machine. In Necula's case, the flash drive seems to have become the camel that was unable to pass through the eye of a needle. … Read more

T-Mobile USA reveals HSPA+ plans

Editors' note: Though T-Mobile is billing it as 4G technology, HSPA+ is a 3G technology based on existing 3G standards.

BARCELONA, Spain--On a chilly morning at Mobile World Congress, T-Mobile USA promised that it would phase in a nationwide HSPA+ network in 2010. Speaking at a press conference at the carrier's glass-fronted pavilion, T-Mobile USA CTO Cole Brodman said the service, which is currently live in Philadelphia, will start to roll out to other cities in the next few months. Though Brodman didn't reveal a specific cities or set a timetable, T-Mobile spokesman Peter Dobrow said the high-speed … Read more
