SlideRocket gets interactive with polling, comments

Web-based presentation creation tool SlideRocket is rolling out a handful of new features today, all of which are aimed at business users. Together, they promise to make it easier to see how the people you're sending a presentation to are viewing it, as well as help those involved in its creation get and manage feedback both before and after it goes out.

That first bit of collaboration is a new commenting tool, which lets a presentation maker ask the viewer, or any colleagues, to leave a comment on any particular slide. Viewers can place these anywhere on a slide, … Read more

Leaked HTC Win Phone 7 handset has sliding speaker

HTC may be capable of making heroic smartphones, but it certainly can't contain leaks of its unannounced devices.

The HTC T8788 looks set to join the brotherhood of Windows Phone 7 handsets due for a "holiday release." Engadget has apparently unearthed information on a touch-screen HTC slider destined for AT&T shelves in the U.S. But what's different is that instead of a QWERTY keyboard, the phone slides open to reveal a built-in speaker. There's also a kickstand around back, which will help make the T8788 more convincing as a portable media player.… Read more

Buzz Out Loud 1286: The Pentagon wants its stuff back (podcast)

The big fight between the Pentagon and Wikileaks has gotten to the high school breakup stage: the Pentagon wants Wikileaks to put its mix tapes, photos, and t-shirts in a shoebox and mail them back. Also, another rousing argument on Net neutrality, this time with Brian Cooley's uniquely capitalist viewpoint in the mix. Good times.

Google confirms Slide acquisition

Google confirmed in a blog post on Friday that it has acquired Slide, a social-media company that was founded by PayPal veteran Max Levchin and had built some of the earliest breakout hits on the Facebook platform. Levchin and the Slide employees will be transitioning over to Google.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but when word of the acquisition broke earlier this week, a price tag of about $182 million was floated around. Slide had raised a total of $78 million in venture capital over the years from firms like the Founders Fund, Khosla Ventures, and T. Rowe … Read more

Google buys Slide for social-gaming push?

TechCrunch's Sarah Lacy reported Wednesday that Slide, which went from photo-sharing service to sheep-throwing Facebook app manufacturer to ad network to second-tier player in the social-gaming craze, has been sold to Google for $182 million and that the deal will be announced Friday.

If true, that's a lot less than the $500 million valuation that was getting touted a few years ago when Slide was one of the Web 2.0 heyday's darlings. That valuation came about when Slide raised a $50 million funding round in January 2008.

Lacy also wrote that this is only the first … Read more

Microsoft's 'Street Slide' takes aim at StreetView

Google's StreetView technology, which is embedded into the Google Maps product on the browser, and on mobile phones like the iPhone and Android, has long wowed users with its option to view the road inside a 360-degree panorama. But Microsoft Research's latest effort, which is being unveiled at this week's Siggraph computer graphics conference, approaches viewing streets from a different direction. Literally.

Instead of having users venture from one "bubble" of captured imagery to the next, as is done in Google's StreetView and Microsoft's Streetside, the new technology, called "Street Slide," … Read more
