The 404 641: Where we use 12 cores to run MS Paint (podcast)

Single virgins looking for love now have their own niche dating Web site called YouAndMeArePure.

Awkward URL aside, the Web site hopes to be an accessible way for virgins to meet and date other virgins. Like all dating Web sites, there's obviously no way to prove that subscribers ($30 per year) are who they say, although the site does sell bona fide male and female "V-Cards" meant to be given away as a sign of commitment to another holder. Also, there's no rule that states you have to be a virgin by choice, so Wilson might … Read more

Evoke Flow radio keeps it classy, portable

Yes, it looks like Darth Vader's lunchbox, but the Evoke Flow Wi-Fi radio from Pure is far from menacing. As an updated take on a classic tabletop radio, the Evoke Flow ($299) goes far beyond the FM dial to bring in thousands of Internet radio broadcasts and podcasts from around the world.

For the money, the Evoke Flow doesn't pack as much value as Logitech's Squeezebox Radio, but it does offer some notable advantages. For example, it lets you go primitive with a built-in FM radio, in case you're out of Wi-Fi range. It also has … Read more

Pure Internet radios hit U.S. shelves July 1

Are you looking for a classy, quality radio that can tune in to both FM and Internet radio stations? Last week, U.K. manufacturer Pure showed me three radio models that could hit the mark, which the company will be bringing to the U.S. starting July 1.

Our CNET UK team has already rated the Evoke Flow, Oasis Flow, and Siesta Flow radios, bestowing all three with an excellent score. We'll want to try them out for ourselves, of course, but I think it's safe to say these high-tech radios aren't too shabby.

Price-wise, you're … Read more

Microsoft launches Kin phones (live blog)

During an event Monday morning, Microsoft announced that it has teamed with Verizon on a pair of feature phones for the youthful Facebook crowd. The Kin One and Kin Two are the first in the Windows Phone family to come with the Zune music service. The following is a record of our live coverage from the event:

SAN FRANCISCO--Microsoft and Verizon on Monday will be introducing two new feature phones, code-named Turtle and Pure, aimed at the always-connected messaging crowd.

The pair of slider phones, each with a touch screen and keyboard, can be thought of as successors to the Sidekick line that Microsoft got with its Danger acquisition. Part of a long-running internal project called "Pink," they will be heavy on social networking and also will be the first phones to be able to access the Zune music service.

How will they stack up against the iPhone? They're not really intended to compete with Apple's juggernaut, but they may well help Microsoft regain its footing in the phone business. Plus, adding scale to the Zune community could help make the Zune feature of Windows Phone more compelling.

We'll be at the event--the start time is 10 a.m. PDT--where the phones will be unveiled, bringing you the action right here as it unfolds. So bookmark this post and check back for all the details.

9:21 a.m. PDT: The press is huddled outside Mighty, the club where Microsoft is holding the event. They haven't let us in yet.

So far, I haven't gotten anyone to confirm rumors the devices will be dubbed "Kin."

9:57 a.m. PDT: We're all inside the club. Lounge music playing softly as Ritual Coffee Roasters brew is being served to warm us up. Nothing going on yet. Various video monitors are running a slideshow of images similar to those on the invitation. The main screen carries the Sharp, Windows phone, Verizon, and Vodaphone logos.

10:00 a.m. PDT: We just got the five-minute warning.

10:02 a.m. PDT: Confirmed: It's Kin One and Kin Two. Microsoft's Kin site is live here, with pictures and details. … Read more

Microsoft's mystery event revealed

Microsoft's mystery event is a mystery no more.

A source confirms I was on target with my prediction that the event will herald the introduction of Microsoft's long-awaited new phones for the always-connected crowd. The devices, code-named Pure and Turtle, are both slider phones, each with a touch screen and keyboard, a source told CNET. In the U.S., the devices will run on Verizon Wireless' network and go on sale within the month following the event.

Microsoft plans to unveil the devices at the April 12 event in San Francisco.

However, those wanting an iPhone should really … Read more

Cisco takes the Flip approach to home routers

One of the most essential tech products at home is also probably the one you hate the most: your wireless router.

Setting up a home network can be for some an excruciating experience, one that can leave even tech-savvy folks wringing their hands while switching off between calling the router's customer service line and their Internet service provider.

Cisco Systems says it's designed a new line of routers specifically to avoid this. The Valet and Valet Plus, will be available at retailers like Best Buy, Staples, and Target and online at Amazon.com starting Wednesday for $99 and $… Read more

Handling the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness

Two months ago at CES we captured a few photos of the conversation-piece Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness. And now that we're back in Vegas, we're giving it the video treatment as well.

The Pureness lacks the high-end features of its Xperia X10 and X1 siblings. On the bottom, its candy-bar design is basic as well--you'll see just a flat keypad and cramped navigation controls--but look above and you'll notice the translucent display.

It's a bit weird, frankly, so we expect that you'll either love or hate this phone. You can see past the text … Read more

Take wireless charging on the go

WildCharger's products have always left us a bit divided. Though the wireless charging pads certainly work as promised, we haven't rushed out to buy them. Sure the ability to charge several gadgets at once is convenient, and the technology certainly is novel, but we can be content with powering our handset the normal way.

WildCharge, however, is busily expanding its product line, and at CES 2010 the company (now called Pure Energy Solutions) showed the a new Portable WildCharge Pad. At 5.24 inches long by 2.7 inches wide by 0.47 inch deep, the pad can … Read more

Sony Ericsson phones cover all the bases

The spiffy Xperia X10 wasn't the only notable phone sitting pretty in the Sony Ericsson booth. We also checked out a few new models that range from eco-friendly to runway-worthy to just plain odd. Catch them in our Sony Ericsson CES slideshow, but read the highlights here.

Xperia Pureness Weighing in with more than a little wow factor, the Xperia Pureness has a transparent display on top of its otherwise ordinary candy bar design. It's certainly a conversation piece, but we're wondering just how it will perform in the real world.
