Priest's PowerPoint to parents takes risque turn

Many people enjoy it when technology works automatically. Sometimes, though, a little stick-shift principle might be the wiser course.

I make this entirely free suggestion on having heard about Father Martin McVeigh, a priest in County Tyrone, Ireland.

McVeigh was making a presentation to parents of children preparing for Holy Communion. Like any modern pastor would do, he prepared a PowerPoint and carefully inserted his USB stick into a computer.

For reasons that seem not entirely clear, scenes of gay pornography appeared on the screen. Yes, in a slideshow.

The Associated Press offers that the parents at St. Mary's … Read more

How 600 tweets can get you a porn star prom date

Some people use Twitter passively, seeking out news, gossip, and some strange hashtag to make their day.

Others understand that it can be a proactive tool, one that can bring you love and affection. Or at least a date with a porn star.

18-year-old Mike Stone got it into his head that it would be fun to have a porn star as his prom date. You might be critical of such a wheeze. But, goodness, if he's old enough to go to war, surely he's old enough to ask a girl out on a date.

The lovely thing … Read more

The 404 1,000: Where we enter the 2K (podcast)

Welcome to our 1,000th episode of The 404 Podcast! It's an exciting mile marker for the show, so we commemorate it with Wilson Tang--remember that guy?

This episode is packed with stories guaranteed to induce Wilson's chuckle that we miss so dearly.

And since we all know how much Wilson worships Apple, we're talking about a bunch of Idiots paying for a $0.99 service that adds a "Sent From My iPhone" signature to the end of every going message, YouPorn getting caught with their collective pants down, Google adding concert listings to their search results, and an ugly YouTube trend that takes advantage of self-conscious teenagers.… Read more

Porn on large screen TVs shocks at Best Buy

There has been a disturbance at one of your favorite gadget stores. A serious disturbance.

After years of wandering into Best Buys and seeing anodyne programming on all its large televisions, please imagine how customers at the branch in Greenville, S.C., might have felt when they were confronted with porn.

As the local CBS Channel 7 displays it, startled families were positively goggling with shock when a porn movie appeared on some of the store's 55-inchers.

The outrage must have been heard at the very least in the Carolina to the north. And, perhaps, Brazil to the south. … Read more

Reddit bans sexually suggestive images of children

In response a great deal of criticism and controversy, Reddit has decided to ban the posting of sexually suggestive or exploitive images of minors.

After years of dealing with child pornography on a case-by-case basis, the social news site announced today that it would ban all subreddits that focus on the sexualization of children. Beyond obviously illegal content, the large amount of content in a legal grey area eventually convinced the site's administrators that its previous policy had "become unsustainable."

"We have changed our policy because interpreting the vague and debated legal guidelines on a case … Read more

Copyright defendant: Porn may be, um, unprotected

Some say that pornography lacks originality. And yet I find myself uplifted by the originality of an argument presented by a woman accused--wrongly, she insists--of illegally downloading the porn oeuvre "Amateur Allure Jen" on BitTorrent. A woman who has decided to fight back.

As Torrent Freak uploads the tale--backed up by a court-filed complaint (see below)--not long ago, an outfit calling itself Hard Drive Productions sued one Liuxia Wong over her alleged illegal download. Hard Drive later allegedly sought to drive a hard bargain by offering to settle its complaint with Wong for a mere $3,… Read more

Iranian court upholds Web programmer's death sentence

The execution of Iranian Web programmer Saeed Malekpour may be imminent.

The death sentence of Malekpour, who was convicted of "insulting and desecrating Islam" for developing software used by porn sites, was confirmed this week by Iran's Supreme Court. The software that Malekpour developed enables photos to be uploaded online and, according to Amnesty International, was used by a porn site without his knowledge.

Malekpour, 35, was a permanent resident of Canada when he was arrested during a visit to Iran in October 2008. According to The Guardian, after spending more than a year in solitary confinement … Read more

Porn stars are at CES, after all

You will be interested in the fact that, last night, Lexi Belle was walking around with an iPad on her chest encouraging people to press it and guess which was her real chest on the screen.

I was interested in the fact that Allison Vivas, CEO of Pink Visual, told me this: "This generation of girls aged 18 to 22 is the first that doesn't think porn is something dirty that their boyfriends do behind their backs."

You will be interested to learn that Alexis Texas and Kirsten Price were there. (The "you" I am … Read more

'Internet is for Porn' pops up during House SOPA debate

A marathon U.S. House of Representatives debate on the Stop Online Piracy Act took an unusual detour: into the popularity of online porn.

A two-day debate in the House Judiciary committee--which has been postponed until at least next Wednesday and perhaps until 2012--was interrupted by the appearance of the popular meme "The Internet is for Porn."

Rep. Jared Polis, a Colorado Democrat who presumably knows his way around the Internet better than any other member of Congress (he founded BlueMountainArts.com), was the committee member who decided to bring up the prevalence of online porn. (See CNET'… Read more
