New profile pages coming to all Twitter users Dec. 12

Just a few months ago, Twitter announced a new look for its profile pages in a bid to mimic some of the visual allure of Facebook's Timeline cover photos -- though the update was only available to a subset of users.

Now the microblogging service is finally rolling out the redesign to all users. On December 12, everyone will be able to update their Twitter profiles to include a large header image across the top of the page with a smaller profile image in the center (see image above).

And no, users really don't have a choice about … Read more

Transfer files and more with Cyberduck, but at a price

With a name like Cyberduck you might be wondering what type of app this is. Most people will not guess that Cyberduck is an open-source FTP browser designed for file transfers. At $23.99, Cyberduck has to provide a lot of capabilities to compete with free FTP systems.

As an FTP download and upload client, Cyberduck works well. The interface is clean and easy to work with. You can browse through folders and preview files in a Quick Look window, and you can also launch editors from within the Cyberduck tool to make changes to files. Unlike most FTP tools, … Read more

Apple granted design patent for turning pages

Since the announced departure of Apple iOS chief Scott Forstall, much has been written about skeuomorphism -- the practice of designing things to look like their real-world counterparts. Apple has made a heavy practice of it in its software, and now the company has another part of that experience patented in the U.S.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office this week granted a rather noteworthy design patent for the digital equivalent of the page turn (PDF), that time-honored tradition of flipping pages while looking through a book, a magazine, or other stack of bound paper.

How does Facebook decide which posts you see? Let Yoda explain

Facebook's been under a lot of scrutiny lately to explain why some brands' posts haven't been reaching as many users as usual, so it brought in a big name to shed some light on the process: Yoda.

Facebook Product Manager Will Cathcart channeled the fabled Jedi Master to explain how the network's algorithm, called EdgeRank, works to keep irrelevant content off a users' feed. If Yoda continually tells Facebook that he doesn't want to see updates from the Death Star, the algorithm makes sure he won't.

"What would Yoda do if he sees this … Read more

Facebook caters to businesses, others with separate news feed

As Facebook works to keep its users happy by minimizing the number of promotional posts that appear with friends' posts in the News Feed, businesses have asked for a new way to reach fans.

Enter a separate "Pages Feed," rolled out today.

Unlike the standard News Feed, which mixes posts from friends with some posts from promotionally oriented Facebook "Pages" that users have Liked -- and that Facebook's spam filter has deemed relevant -- the Pages Feed is unfiltered and features only the promotional posts. Users can click to it from a button on the … Read more

Facebook tests different formats for comments

Facebook is trying out a couple new commenting features this week, including a reply button and a system that puts more engaging comments at the top of a thread.

The social network rolled out the comment thread test today to a small number of accounts, according to a Facebook spokesperson. The new format puts the comments that have more Likes or replies at the top of heap, adding to another, more fundamental change -- the ability to directly comment on other comments with the introduction of a reply button.

Facebook has been testing a reply button on comments that lets … Read more

Yahoo tests new Windows 8-like home page

Yahoo may be drawing some inspiration from Microsoft in its latest home page redesign.

The Internet search and media company is testing out a new version of its home page that uses larger tiles similar to Microsoft's Windows 8, according to AllThingsD.

The redesign seems better suited for touch-screen devices, a smart move with the increasing proliferation of tablets and other touch-friendly "hybrid" devices coming from the launch of Windows 8, alongside iPads and smartphones with increasingly larger displays.

The approach uses large photos stacked at the top of the page, similar to both Windows 8's … Read more
