Most CEOs not tapping into social media

A majority 64 percent of CEOs are not using social media to engage with the public and other stakeholders, according to a new study from PR firm Weber Shandwick.

Released yesterday, the report "Socializing Your CEO: From (Un)Social to Social" (PDF) looked at the social media presence and activities of CEOs from the world's top 50 companies.

Among those CEOs profiled, 93 percent have been reaching out to people outside their companies in traditional ways. Most have been quoted in news and business publications, while 40 percent have talked to audiences directly at public events.

Yesterday the Windows Live team at Microsoft announced the release of Messenger for the Zune HD.

I'm not much of a Messenger user, but one of the big things Microsoft added to the new version of the desktop app is Facebook integration, and that same functionality is built into the Zune version of Messenger. I followed Apple's music event keynote live on my MacBook and as CEO Steve Jobs demonstrated the upcoming Ping social-networking service for iTunes 10, I had a strange sense of deja vu. MySpace finally plugs into Facebook

MySpace has finally made a concession of sorts: that rival Facebook has grown so dominant that not syncing up to its web of social connections would be a mistake. The News Corp.-owned social network, as was rumored late last year, has "synced" its service with Facebook (and Twitter) so that members can cross-post their status updates as well as shared content.

It's pretty self-explanatory, taking the recently revamped "stream" design of MySpace profiles and plugging in Twitter and Facebook's application program interfaces (APIs).

Survey: Facebook fails at customer satisfaction

Who's worst at customer satisfaction--airline companies, your local cable provider, or Facebook? Well, according to a new study from ForeSee Results, all three are in the dumps, scoring poor grades among consumers.

Released Tuesday by ForeSee Results and the American Customer Satisfaction Index, the latest annual ACSI e-business report gave Facebook a score of 64 out of 100, one of the lowest levels of customer satisfaction among all businesses measured and on par with airlines and cable companies.

MySpace Music, that long slumbering music unit of the struggling social network, is considering whether to begin charging users, according to a source close to the negotiations.

The source said Wednesday that MySpace Music execs have spoken to some of the top labels about creating a subscription service. This apparently confirms a report published Tuesday by the Web site of Side-Line, a music magazine. Citing sources close to News Corp., parent company of MySpace, the publication said it wants to move MySpace Music to a paid model and that it's burning through a lot of money each month.

MySpace eyes follow-on for Google ad deal

As MySpace's search advertising deal with Google nears its expiration next month, parent News Corp. is reportedly trying to cut a new ad deal with Google, Microsoft, or Yahoo, according to a story in Tuesday's Wall Street Journal (subscription required).

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the Journal, which is also owned by News Corp., said that under MySpace's current deal, Google had agreed to kick in $900 million in guaranteed payments for the right to sell ads on MySpace and other, smaller News Corp. sites. MySpace co-president Jason Hirschhorn departs

Following a report on TechCrunch, MySpace co-president Jason Hirschhorn has confirmed via his personal Twitter account that he's leaving the company after fewer than six months at the helm.

Hirschhorn, an MTV Networks and Sling Media veteran, had been at MySpace for just over a year, having previously served as chief product officer.
