If HP's board calls, don't pick up the phone

Dear Meg Whitman,

I hear you could be named the next chief executive of that big, whacky company known as Hewlett-Packard. I have some unsolicited advice about this:

Run!

I know it must be mighty tempting. After all, it's HP. It's the biggest computing company, at least in terms of revenue. (An Apple investor will gleefully point out who rules the market cap contest.) HP was one of the building blocks of Silicon Valley. "The HP Way" used to be a bible for how to run a big business. And the person who steadies the ship … Read more

Would Meg Whitman be up to running HP?

Meg Whitman is allegedly a top pick to be Hewlett-Packard's next CEO, but the to-do list is massive and it's unclear whether swapping leaders will make that much of a difference.

The larger questions revolve around whether HP has a board of directors problem, a leadership issue, or a questionable master plan, assuming it still has one. Perhaps it's all of the above.

The to-do list for Whitman would go like this:

1. Decide what to do with the PC business. Should it stay or go?

2. Determine if HP's software strategy is correct and figure … Read more

HP board meets but makes no move on CEO ouster, WSJ says

Hewlett-Packard's board met tonight to consider ousting CEO Leo Apotheker, but apparently reached no decisions about a successor, according to a Wall Street Journal report that cites unnamed sources.

The board is being watched closely following reports earlier today that HP's board of directors is nearing a decision to remove Apotheker as CEO and hire former eBay CEO Meg Whitman in his place. Whitman joined the company's board in January.

The Journal reached Whitman today, but she declined comment, according to the report.

HP did not immediately respond to an e-mail from CNET seeking comment on the … Read more

Meg Whitman for HP CEO? Board eyes change

He hasn't even been around for a year, and already reports are cropping up suggesting that Hewlett-Packard Chief Executive Leo Apotheker will soon be replaced.

According to reports from AllThingsD and Bloomberg, citing anonymous sources, HP's board of directors is nearing a decision to remove Apotheker as CEO, and hire former eBay CEO Meg Whitman in his place. Although both publications said that a deal is by no means in place between HP and Whitman, Bloomberg's sources said she could be named to the position initially in an interim basis.

Apotheker took over at HP in November. … Read more

How Meg Whitman could have won

I woke up this morning thinking about Meg Whitman. You see, I'm finding hard to come to terms with the fact that my campaign to become customer of the week at my local Starbucks was successful and Whitman's quest to be governor of the week was not.

Should you have been unaccountably unaccounted for during World Series celebrations, you might have missed that the former eBay CEO failed in her grandiloquent bid to become CEO of California, or whatever they call that position in which everyone who tries fails.

Some have put this abject calamity down to a … Read more

GOP's Whitman, Fiorina lose California elections

Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina, two ex-Silicon Valley executives who pledged to use their business acumen to fix California's many economic woes, today fell short in their bids to overcome their Democratic rivals.

Despite widespread anti-incumbent sentiment and a California unemployment rate hovering around 12 percent to 13 percent, Whitman and Fiorina failed to overcome their Democratic adversaries: onetime Gov. Jerry Brown, who sought to reclaim his old job, and incumbent Sen. Barbara Boxer, who has been in the U.S. Congress for approximately 28 years.

California polls closed at 8 p.m. PT. But it can take a … Read more

Meg Whitman's campaign links to man in tutu

When you're running for governor and suggesting that perhaps your expertise in having run eBay will be much needed to sort out California, it is good to ensure that you have your tweets all in a row.

Some were frightfully amused that, Sarah Pompei, a spokeswoman for Meg Whitman, sent out a tweet that purported to link to an endorsement from the Deputy Sheriffs' Association of San Diego County but instead linked to the clip I have embedded.

Her tweet had read: "SD Cnty Sheriff Assoc says @Whitman2010 4 gov! RT: @Murphy4MegNews: CA Cops get it: Jerry Brown … Read more

Cheezburger Network to Whitman campaign: FAIL!

Graphics in a political attack ad for California gubernatorial candidate and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman that imitated popular humor blog FailBlog aren't going over too well with Cheezburger Network, the amalgam of blogs that owns FailBlog.

"We are talking to our attorneys on this," Cheezburger Network founder and CEO Ben Huh told CNET via e-mail. "We haven't decided on a course of action, if any. The law is a complex beast."

Huh's comment followed a post he wrote Friday on FailBlog, in which he addressed the fact that a recent video campaign … Read more

Why digital license plates are a great idea

As a tax-paying, sun-worshiping, tourist-tolerating resident of California, may I say how delighted I am to hear that my state is leading the way toward digital license plates?

As a commercially caring, capitalism-believing, creatively challenging resident of California, may I say how delighted I am that these digital plates will have ads?

There is nothing more dull than sitting behind another car on the Golden Gate Bridge and having to stare at a number plate that reads "5XYJ204."

How could anyone have imagined that a random set of numbers and letters could make anyone happy? Well, anyone other … Read more
