Microsoft gets help to offer Gmail users better SkyDrive access

Microsoft and partner Attachments.me are trying to simplify the way Gmail users can use Microsoft's SkyDrive personal cloud-storage service.

Yesterday, Microsoft announced details of the partnership -- via which Google Gmail users can access SkyDrive files directly from their in-box, save e-mail attachments directly to SkyDrive, and share files directly from their SkyDrive. The new capabilities are provided via Attachment.me's Chrome extension.

What's happening behind the scenes enabling this scenario is an update to the SkyDrive software development kit (SDK). The SDK includes an application programming interface (API) that is similar to the file picker for Windows 8 appsRead more

Hug Me Coat wraps its sad, warm arms around you

We've seen some unusual fashion statements around here before. There's a Wampa-skin dress and a jacket that collects rain, for example, but neither is quite as unusual or strangely unsettling as the Hug Me Coat.

The Hug Me Coat comes from Si Leong Chan, a London College of Fashion student. It's a bright green puffer coat with a row of hands with intertwined fingers running down the front. It gives the illusion of many martian arms grasping the model's torso.… Read more

Ahead of the overload, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian confirmed that President Obama was legitimately participating in the event, adding that the questions were being answered from Charlottesville, Va., where Obama is currently campaigning for a second term.

'Call me Maybe' gets 'Star Wars,' 'Star Trek' treatments

What's better than a summer pop hit? How about Han Solo, Darth Vader, and the whole "Star Wars" crew serenading you with a summer pop hit? That's a million times better. As it turns out, Yoda is quite the crooner.

YouTube user jamesconvenant rejiggered the Carly Rae Jepsen hit "Call me Maybe" with footage from the "Star Wars" franchise. He even managed to work in some subtitled Jabba the Hutt contributions.

Not to be outdone, the "Star Trek" fan contingent got on the case and intrepid YouTuber Zyphorg put together a version featuring Captain Picard and the Next Generation Enterprise crew. It's a little choppier than the "Star Wars" version, but impressive nonetheless.… Read more

Baby-picture zapping plug-in is well Liked on Facebook

People generally have children in order to reproduce their own imperfect selves and try to make them more perfect.

This is a legitimate, if slightly warped, activity -- yet we tolerate it for what we imagine is a social good.

However, less of a social good is these parents constantly thrusting images of their progeny into the exclusive preserve of our Facebook pages.

They don't imagine that others might find these pictures annoying, dull, or -- dare one say it -- visually displeasing. They do it to wave their own fecundity into your every day.

There is now relief from this discomfort, a tool that has interesting ramifications.… Read more

Digg buried into News.me

Friday's top tech stories teach us that Web giants may die, but ice cream is forever:

What's left of the social news aggregator Digg has been purchased by Betaworks, a company that runs Bit.ly and several other Web businesses. Digg will be folded into News.me, a daily news app and e-mail digest. Digg has been struggling and was slowly disassembled. A subsidiary of Washington Post bought some of the Digg talent, LinkedIn grabbed some patents, and on Thursday, Betaworks acquired what was left. The Wall Street Journal has sources saying Betaworks acquired Digg for around $500,… Read more

WithMe Bone concept soothes lonely dogs

Dogs are pack animals. When their pack leaders go off to work, leave on vacation, or go run some errands, life can feel awfully lonely for the pooches left behind.

Chinese product designer Yunfan Tan has an idea he hopes will ease the sadness for pouty pups. His WithMe Bone design plays to a dog's excellent senses of smell and hearing.

The idea is you stuff a worn piece of clothing like a sock into the bone. Small perforations let the smell out. A tiny voice recorder inside tapes you saying soothing messages to Fido, such as "Good boy!" or "Please don't pee on the rug." The audio is motion activated when the bone is shaken.… Read more
