Microsoft gives manufacturers a taste of Mango

Microsoft announced this morning that the next version of the Windows Phone operating system, code-named Mango, has been delivered to manufacturers, which can begin testing it on their handsets.

The move is one of the final steps before the software arrives on new phones and is delivered to existing users as a software update.

"This marks the point in the development process where we hand code to our handset and mobile-operator partners to optimize Mango for their specific phone and network configurations," Terry Myerson, Microsoft's corporate vice president of engineering for Windows phone, wrote on a company … Read more

Top five things Windows Phone needs to improve

The previews for the next version of Windows Phone 7 are out, and overall, the response from the press has been largely favorable, including CNET's. The Mango update brings more than 500 new features to Microsoft's mobile operating system and continues to build on a solid platform, with smarter integration of apps, more-robust features, and a faster browser. It also addresses a number of issues we had with the software when it first launched in November, so Microsoft definitely deserves kudos.

Microsoft tries accelerating mobile Web progress

Apparently happy with its test drive effort to promote the combination of advanced Web programming and its new IE9 browser for Windows PCs, Microsoft is trying the same formula with its mobile browser.

The company unveiled its Mobile Test Drive site yesterday as a showcase for what can be done with mobile browsers.

Microsoft: Port your Android apps to Windows Phone

In an effort to get more developers on board, Microsoft has unveiled a tool designed to help Android developers port their apps over to Windows Phone.

In a blog post yesterday, Microsoft cautioned that there's no "magic wand" for Android developers that can automatically port their apps to Windows Phone. But the company is hoping that a new API tool, white paper, and other technical resources can take some of the pain out of the process.

CEO Elop: Nokia acquisition rumors 'baseless'

LONDON--Stephen Elop, Nokia's new chief executive, today shot down rumors that business partners Microsoft or Samsung are in talks to acquire the company.

"All those rumors are baseless," he told attendees of the Open Mobile Summit here. The company isn't for sale, he indicated.
