Logitech confesses to 'gigantic' mistake with Google TV

Logitech is halting production of its Google TV Revue set-top boxes, acknowledging that the whole affair was a financial disaster for the company.

At an Analyst and Investor Day hosted by Logitech on Wednesday, CEO Guerrino De Luca confessed that the Revue was a "mistake of implementation of a gigantic nature." In his presentation, DeLuca in part pointed the finger at Google TV, referring to it as a "beta" product, according to The Verge.

De Luca told investors that Logitech lost more than $100 million in operating profits on the Revue after bringing it to the … Read more

Logitech debuts portable Mini Boombox Bluetooth speaker

In a nod to the success of the Jawbone Jambox mini Blueooth speaker, Logitech has just announced the Mini Boombox, a $99.99 portable Bluetooth speaker with a built-in rechargeable battery and speakerphone capabilities.

While the speaker is compact, it appears to be larger than the Jambox (we're still waiting for weight and dimensions). Battery life is rated at 10 hours, which seems decent enough, and Logitech is touting the touch controls on the top of the unit and a "specially designed acoustic chamber that delivers great sound with enhanced bass."

The speaker is obviously a good deal cheaper than the Jambox, which runs around $180, so we're curious to know how it sounds and just how compact it really is. … Read more

New Google TV 2.0 hardware coming soon

The Google TV 2.0 update is almost upon is, but unfortunately there will be no new hardware to accompany it...yet.

According to Google engineers, new hardware is planned for release later in the year, and while the company was unable to go into specifics, we believe this could include the Vizio Google TV the company previewed at CES 2011. It's rumored to go on sale in December 2011.… Read more

Gran Turismo 5 revs up for massive update

Nearly a year after its release, Gran Turismo 5 for PlayStation 3 is still getting huge updates based on fan feedback, according to Sony's official PlayStation blog.

Later this month, Polyphony Digital will roll out a big refresh to the popular racing title that boasts many noteworthy improvements. The best part is that the update will be free, and that the game is getting a price cut from $59.99 to $39.99 in the U.S.

All cars will now have an interior view, a feature previously only available for premium vehicles. There's also word of shortened load times (Gran Turismo 5 has one of the most epically long install times of any PS3 game) and improved menu response, which was a somewhat annoying issue previously when players just wanted to get into a quick race.

Another nice addition coming to GT5 is the ability to save progress during endurance races. In the past, events like the Indy 500 were very tedious, because if you shut off the PS3 you'd have to start over. NASCAR fans will also be delighted to see the addition of 11 cars from this year's season. … Read more

Hobbled program guide saps Logitech Harmony Link iPad remote accessory

We're still continuing to test the Logitech Harmony Link and will be posting a full, rated review soon. What follows are our first impressions after using the Harmony Link for a few days.

Turning your iPad or iPhone into a universal remote control isn't a new idea, but we had high hopes that Logitech could do it right, given the company's excellent line of Harmony remotes. The Logitech Harmony Link ($100) also goes one step further with its iPad app, by integrating the full listings of your local TV providers, letting you browse shows with a slick interface, rather than the clunky grid your cable company offers up. We've had the chance to play with the Harmony Link for a few days now, and although it has much of the typical Harmony functionality we love, it hasn't quite lived up to our expectations.

Why iPhone speakers are ditching AirPlay for Bluetooth

Big-name iPhone/iPod speaker manufacturers like Bose and Logitech have recently rolled out new products designed to wirelessly stream music from your iOS devices using...Bluetooth. Wait, wasn't AirPlay supposed to take over in this space, promising better compatibility, range, and sound quality? It was, but as good as AirPlay is, it's not a great choice for iPod speakers this year, especially with the Bluetooth alternative. Here's why.

Bluetooth works nearly identically to AirPlay on iOS devices When we reviewed LG's LSB316 sound bar with built-in Bluetooth, we were surprised at how easily the Bluetooth feature worked with our iPhone 4. It felt exactly like AirPlay, offering the same compatibility between apps, and it even uses the AirPlay icon. If nobody told you it was Bluetooth, you probably wouldn't even realize you weren't using AirPlay.

AirPlay products are prohibitively expensive so far If you really want AirPlay, you can plunk down $600 for the B&W Zeppelin Air Speaker, but that's about four times more than most people want to spend on an iPhone speaker. JBL's On Air Wireless costs $350. Even iHome, known for its budget iPod speakers, is charging $300 for its AirPlay-equipped iW1.… Read more

Logitech brings Harmony remote to iOS and Android with Harmony Link

With more universal remote apps becoming available for the iOS and Android devices, we figured it was only a matter of time before Logitech would bring its industry-leading Harmony brand over to tablets and smartphones. Well, now it has with a $99.99 accessory and free app called Harmony Link that are due to arrive in October.

The hockey-puck-size device is designed to sit near your AV setup, and taps into your Wi-Fi network to translate your commands into IR (infrared) signals that then get blasted out to your TV and various other components. Initially, Logitech is targeting iPad users … Read more

Logitech Wireless Touchpad brings gesture controls to PCs

In Microsoft's vision of the future, you'll only need one input device for multiple computers, but who said it has to be a mouse? Logitech launched its Wireless Touchpad today that gives PC users a chance to pinch, point, and scroll their way across the screen.

Similar to the design of the Apple Magic Trackpad, the Wireless Touchpad offers 5 inches of real estate for multiple fingers to navigate by taking advantage of Windows 7's gesture-based controls and multitouch: one finger to move the cursor, two fingers to page scroll, three fingers for photo browsing, and four … Read more
