The Iomega eGo portable hard drive can take a serious beating

It's been awhile since we've seen a ruggedized external hard drive come to the market. The last one we reviewed was the LaCie Rugged All-Terrain Hard Drive; it scored well in the speed tests and even withstood a 30-inch drop off a desk in nonoperating mode.

Iomega's latest drive is ready for battle

If LaCie is trying to lock up the fashionista market by hiring European designers to tart up their storage devices, Iomega seems to be sending an entirely different message with its "eGo" line of portable drives.

EMC scoops up Iomega

And now for something completely different.

Software and storage company EMC announced Tuesday that it will purchase Iomega for $213 million, or $3.85 per share. EMC expects the deal to close sometime during the second quarter of this year.

EMC has traditionally played in enterprise-level storage and software arenas. Iomega is best-known for hard drives and storage for consumers and small-business customers. EMC hinted that this is just its first move into consumer hardware business.

Iomega announced today that the company is expanding its lineup of products geared towards the Mac community. The announcement, made at the Apple Expo 2007 in Paris, covers both existing and new products. Iomega brings its NAS storage to the home

Iomega announced today that it has finally moved into the home NAS market. Although Iomega has long produced NAS storage for small businesses, it hasn't brought its technology into the home. The new Home Network Hard Drive does exactly that. The network-attached storage drive comes in 320GB, 360GB and 500GB capacities, and costs just a little more than comparably sized USB hard drives. Iomega unveils new members of its StorCenter line for small businesses

Iomega announced today three new members of its StorCenter Network hard drive family. All three offer a built-in media server, an on-board print server, Active Directory support, a journaling file system, and EMC Retrospect backup and recovery software, as well as two external USB ports for hard drives or printers.

The 1TB product comprises two 500GB drives and supports RAID 1, RAID 0, and JBOD. The 500GB and 750GB versions each contain just one drive. All three use 7,200rpm SATA-II drives with 8MB of cache. They also offer a gigabit Ethernet connection.

Seagate clears 1 terabyte; Iomega goes portable

Seagate announced on Monday two hard drives that break the 1-terabyte barrier, the Barracuda 7200.11 and Barracuda ES.2, while Iomega announced two external drive models.

Seagate's ES.2 is geared for high-capacity storage systems and includes technology called Rotational Vibration Feed Forward designed to maintain performance despite the disruptions of other nearby drives. It can use both the Serial Attached SCIS (SAS) and Serial ATA (SATA) interfaces. And its PowerTrim feature reduces power consumption 20 percent overall compared to the company's previous 750GB drives, Seagate said.
