How to get Android's Roboto font on your computer

When working on Ice Cream Sandwich, Google aimed to create a font made specifically for high-resolution screens. The end result was Roboto. Up until now, Roboto was limited to Android devices running ICS. Late last week, Google posted it for all to download and use on their personal computer.

You can download a ZIP file containing all 16 variations of the font by visiting the Android Design site.

After downloading the font files, you can either open each design's file and install it to your system or by adding the files to your system's Font folder. … Read more

What makes the new iPad tick: A peek inside

The new iPad isn't waltzing into a competitive vacuum. That wow-worthy display notwithstanding, Apple still has to go head-to-head on performance.

Chip-review site Anandtech confirmed with Apple that sitting right next to the A5X's quad-core GPU (graphics processing unit) is a dual-core CPU (central processing unit).

Apple had nothing to say about the CPU (which typically garners the most attention) when it announced the new iPad, because the CPU really hasn't changed from the iPad 2.

The upshot is that Apple is pitting the A5X's quad-core GPU against a quad-core Nvidia CPU.

So, how does it … Read more

Google, Asus to hook up on 7-inch Android tablet, says report

Yet another report is claiming an imminent 7-inch Google tablet. And add Asus to the mix as that company will make and co-brand the device.

Google and Asus will unveil a 7-inch co-branded tablet PC as early as May, said DigiTimes in a report dated March 9.

NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim told CNET last month that the tablet will have a 1280x800 resolution 7-inch display and production is slated for April. The initial production run is between 1.5 million to 2 million units, Shim said.

And another report earlier this month said at least one model will retail … Read more

The camera app on ICS devices offers more tools to the point-and-shoot user than the camera apps from previous versions of Android. However, the choices for ICS devices is very limited right now, so most users on this version will be rocking a Galaxy Nexus.

If this device isn't for you or you're just feeling a little envious of the awesome ICS camera app, chances are that you can snag those most of those same features for yourself. This is done by using a port of the new camera app, and will work with most Android … Read more

Panasonic stakes smartphone recovery on Eluga line

BARCELONA, Spain--We now know the two Android phones on which Panasonic is pinning its hopes for a successful re-entry into the world market for mobile phones.

The good news: they're both sleek, waterproof designs with buttons tucked into the back. The bad news: they're named "Eluga."

Maybe the name test-marketed better in Europe and Japan, where the phones will arrive first, but to me it sounds like a big, homely fish. In any event, they'll be carrying the weight of Panasonic's attempt to reach beyond the Japanese mobile phone market into which the company … Read more

Compact One V last to join HTC lineup sans carrier

Perhaps it's because it has a chin like the old HTC Hero, or maybe it's because the phone has a smaller 3.7-inch screen. Whatever the reason, the new HTC One V didn't launch at Mobile World Congress with splashy plans to land on a U.S. carrier.

The HTC One V is the third announced handset to run ICS, but unlike the HTC One X, which boasts a fire-breathing quad-core processor, the One V will ship with a slow single-core CPU. That said, the phone will come with Google's latest and greatest Ice Cream Sandwich OS, aka Android 4.0. … Read more

Huawei: Our Ascend D Quad is world's fastest smartphone

Surprise, surprise. It turns out the first quad-core smartphones to be announced at Mobile World Congress aren't powered by Nvidia's vaunted Tegra 3 chip. Instead, Huawei's D Quad line will feature quad-core silicon specially made by Huawei called the K3V2.

Huawei Chairman Richard Yu took the stage at the MWC show in Barcelona, Spain, to tout the impressive abilities of the company's flagship model, the Ascend D Quad. Other internal hardware includes a big 4.5-inch 720p HD screen, Dolby 5.1 surround sound audio, plus an 8-megapixel rear- and 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. … Read more

LG's Optimus 3D Max modernizes--except for Android 2.3

LG Electronics, a second-tier smartphone maker hoping Google's Android operating system will lift its fortunes, today unveiled its new Optimus 3D Max.

The phone, like its 2011 Optimus 3D predecessor, includes glasses-free 3D display technology on a 4.3-inch display and an ability to shoot 3D videos and photos with dual cameras. This year's model is thinner, has faster 21Mbps HSPA+ networking, and supports near-field communications for tap-to-pay systems and other NFC uses such as switching the phone quickly among car, home, and work modes.

One thing that did not change is the version of Google's latest … Read more
