In tablets, Android's star is rising but...

In the wake of a new report, are Android tablets now a serious threat to Apple's iPad? The quick answer is maybe, if Amazon Kindle Fire shipments pan out as expected.

Let's first look at the report (see chart below) that came out Friday from Strategy Analytics.

While Apple iPad shipments are way up year to year (to 11.1 million from 4.2 million), Android's growth is huge (to 4.5 million from 0.1 million).

That said, there are legitimate questions about whether we're comparing apples to oranges (pun intended). Virtually all of Apple'… Read more

T-Mobile touts two 4G Android tablets: SpringBoard, Galaxy Tab

The U.S. carrier T-Mobile announced plans today to sell to two Android tablets with 4G networking abilities in coming weeks, its own 7-inch SpringBoard and Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Each will come with the newest version of Google's tablet-oriented Honeycomb incarnation of the Android operating system, version 3.2, and will go on sale "in time for the holidays," the company said.

Samsung's 10.1-inch tablet first debuted months ago, but without 4G networking abilities. It's at the heart of a swirling collection of patent infringement lawsuits with Apple, whose iOS-powered iPad … Read more

Adobe: We've got the Touch for tablets

After dipping its toes in the water with some limited-scope mobile apps, Adobe Systems is taking the plunge today with six programs for Android Honeycomb tablets, including the company's flagship brand, Photoshop.

The programs, each to debut in November with a $10 introductory price, fall under the new Adobe Touch Apps brand. And they tie in with the new Adobe Creative Cloud, a service for sharing files, finding services, and transferring works from the tablet apps to Adobe's Creative Suite apps running on traditional computers.

Along with Photoshop Touch, the other apps are Collage, Debut, Ideas, Kuler, and … Read more

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 review: What's the point?

It probably won't surprise you to know that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 ($469, 16GB) feels a whole lot like a smaller version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Scratch that--it feels exactly like a smaller Tab 10.1.

Still, it took a while for me to really accept the fact that Samsung went to all the trouble of making this ever-so-slightly smaller, just-slightly cheaper tablet, and neglected to throw in a single extra bell or whistle to help it stand out from the rest of the company's products.

I honestly can't understand why anyone wouldn'… Read more

Ice Cream Sandwich video leaked by eBay buyer

Android users may have accidentally gotten their first peek at Ice Cream Sandwich.

A person who bought a Samsung Nexus S smartphone via eBay reportedly discovered that the device was running the upcoming version of the Android operating system instead of the current Android flavor, say the folks at Engadget.

Checking the firmware version numbers, Engadget said the phone seemed to be using the same baseband seen in previously leaked screenshots but had a newer build and kernel.

The buyer shot a two-minute video showing off the phone's interface and features. That video then found its way onto Engadget'… Read more
