Vertu tries a new angle or two

It turns out that designer Christopher Tak Cheung Yue may have been onto to something after all with the seven-sided "Suave" phone he proposed for luxury handset maker Vertu. The angular creation looked pretty weird, even for a concept, but Vertu's latest offering actually seems to take some small steps in that direction.

While not nearly as drastic, the new "Ascent Ti" line does feature some unusual contours and textured surfaces to improve the grip, according to Sybarites--a key reason for Yue's geometric design as well. Because it's Vertu, of course, the "… Read more

BenQ is baq--and it's ditched the Siemens

You may remember that BenQ bought Siemens Mobile in 2005 and produced a series of so-so handsets. As evidenced by the lack of BenQ Siemens phones in shops, the partnership didn't exactly last very long, and while the BenQ Siemens "squond" (square and round) campaign did amuse us greatly, it obviously wasn't enough to keep BenQ Siemens in business.

Two years on and BenQ Mobile is back (baq?)--but it's ditched the Siemens and is launching a Windows Mobile smart phone called the BenQ E72. Boasting a compact design, this candybar phone runs on Windows … Read more

Doro HandleEasy 330gsm: Less is more

The terms "easy to use" and "mobile phone" should go hand in hand, but they rarely do. We're regularly driven to tears when in a phone comes in boasting more features than Inspector Gadget's trenchcoat, but requires a forensic decoding of the instruction manual just to send a text message. Thank heavens for the Doro HandleEasy 330gsm.

Doro has been busy making easy-to-use mobile phones for some time now, and the HandleEasy 330gsm is its latest offering. Aimed squarely at users who don't need or want the frills, this handset is a tribute … Read more

Photos: Nokia launches Supernova line

When Frank Sinatra died, his fans knew he wasn't coming back. When Elvis died, his fans simply refused to believe he wasn't coming back. Mostly because they're a demented bunch. But when Nokia's Xpress-On covers seemed to have kicked the bucket, their fans simply wondered, "How am I going to express my individuality now?"

Well, we're happy to tell you that Xpress-On fascias are coming back in the form of Nokia's new Supernova range of handsets, namely the 7610, 7510, 7310 and 7210. The leader of the pack is the 7610 Supernova--a … Read more

Photos: A passel of new Sony Ericsson phones

In true Sony Ericsson style, yesterday saw the announcement of not one but five new handsets, including the Sony Ericsson C905, which boasts an 8.1-megapixel camera. We went along with our standalone camera to take some pictures of the new phones and see if the C905 made our shooter cry.

All the handsets pictured will hopefully be available before the end of the year. Exact launch dates have yet to be announced and pricing isn't known either, but we suspect the C905, S302 and F305 to be free on a monthy contract and the K330 and J132 will … Read more

First impressions of the Sony Ericsson F305

Like its Sony Ericsson W910i Walkman phone with its "Shake Control," the Japanese-Swede's newest gaming phone on the block, the F305, requires some pretty frenetic arm aerobics to play. So much so that it almost launched itself out of my grasp during the hands-on tour. The piano finish on the unit, generously lubricated by now from the gummy smudges of journos at the CommunicAsia fringe event, imbued the F305 with slippery eel-like powers.

Sony Ericsson could well take a page out of Nintendo Wii's book by bundling a wrist strap to avoid future awkward lawsuits. Too bad the lanyard hole sits at the top, rather than at the bottom which would have allowed some creative improv. In close slider mode, this quad-band phone phone is pretty small and flat, about palm-sized, which didn't help with grip. As a side note, the black unit had a more visible oily sheen than the white version. If I had to go for a color, I'd gun for the latter. … Read more

LG Secret debuts in Asia

We knew about the LG Secret KF750 since a couple of months back when the company first launched it in Europe. Today, LG has officially announced this handset for Asia at a press conference held at CommunicAsia.

As reported earlier, this model features a tempered glass screen and carbon-fiber finish for the back cover. Though it has a slide-out numeric keypad, the thickness is kept low at just 11.8 millimeters. Some of the KF750's features include a 5-megapixel camera, touch-screen display, and HSDPA connectivity up to 3.6Mbps. Also built into this device is a motion sensor. This … Read more

Nokia touch-screen iPhone-a-like resurfaces

With the 3G iPhone launch finally out of the way, we thought Nokia would start trumpeting its own touch-screen darling. It hasn't yet, but that doesn't mean a Nokia touch-screen phone isn't already out there--in fact, there are pictures to "prove" it.

A few months ago, a blogger got hold of a supposed Nokia touch-screen phone, but the pictures were dark and not very clear. Now more pictures have surfaced on a now-defunct Flickr stream, this time with a Vodafone logo on board.

So, if we take the pics at face value, what can we … Read more

Hands-on with the new Samsung i900

Leaked images and specifications have led to much speculation about the new Samsung SGH-i900, a Windows Mobile 6.1 PDA-phone. We had one in our possession for a few brief moments and bring you this quick and dirty hands-on.

When we put it beside an iPhone (see more pictures of that after the jump), it was uncanny how similar its shape was to Apple's product. It's thicker than the iPhone but shorter in length. Typically Samsung, the i900 feels solidly built and has a brushed-metal finish all around. Find out more details here.

Report: Motorola close to hiring handset chief

Motorola is getting close to hiring someone to head up its soon-to-be-spun-off handset division, according to a story in The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday.

Hewlett-Packard executive Todd Bradley has emerged as one of two final candidates for the position, according to the article, which cited sources close to the situation. The newspaper reported that the other person under consideration for the position is a top telecom executive whose identity is still unknown.

Motorola, which said in March that it was spinning off the fledgling cell phone division, is supposedly considering two candidates. The Wall Street Journal contacted Bradley by … Read more
