TeleNav GPS Navigator coming to T-Mobile G1

On Thursday, TeleNav announced that starting February 24, it will make its location-based service, TeleNav GPS Navigator, available to T-Mobile G1 owners, bringing real-time turn-by-turn navigation to the Google Android smartphone.

In addition to turn-by-turn driving directions, TeleNav GPS Navigator offers traffic alerts with one-click rerouting, business searches (with more than 10 million listings), gas prices, weather updates, and restaurant reviews.

Speech recognition is also supported, meaning that you'll be able to press a button on the G1, dictate an address or business, and TeleNav will then route to the destination. Alternatively, you can preplan trips through TeleNav's … Read more

LogMeIn Rescue+Mobile now for Andriod--but why?

Added more details 2/12/09 at 10:15 AM PT.

Few see Google Android in its current state as a serious platform for business users. Like the iPhone, it launched without support for the Microsoft Exchange, so there's no native support for syncing to your Outlook calendar and contacts. Android also lacked a lot of native productivity tools to edit online and attached documents, a key collaboration requirement.

Yet this week, LogMeIn announced a version of its remote maintenance software for corporate IT teams and carriers that can support the Android platform. LogMeIn Rescue+Mobile downloads a small … Read more

Report: Apple nixed Android's multitouch

One of the chief complaints about Google's Android is its lack of multitouch support.

Now, according to a VentureBeat report by M.G. Siegler, we may have an idea of why Google skipped the feature on its mobile operating system:

Apple, which of course makes the signature multi-touch mobile device, the iPhone, apparently asked Google not to implement it, and Google agreed, an Android team member tells us.

Further, the Android team member went on to say that they were relieved that Google didn't go against Apple's wishes, given the legal storm that appears to be brewing … Read more

G-1 glass pool table: Shazam!

At CNET Asia, we've seen more than our fair share of pool tables since our last workplace had a pub downstairs with one. In fact, it became such a favorite after-hour haunt for some of our co-workers during Happy Hour that we got our own pool table. Now that we've seen the G-1 pool table from Nottage Design in Australia, there's only one word for it: shazam!

Contrary to the idea that a glass pool table is a bad, bad idea, this looks striking enough to eat off while offering a patented Vitrik playing surface that claims to emulate the feel of felt. Now that we've got to check out.

On top of that, the entire table is constructed with toughened safety glass, so there's no fear this will crack if Mariah Carey hits one of her infamous high notes on the home stereo. It better not, since you'll be sinking a cool $29,750 into the pocket just for the fancy glassworks. Ouch! Video and more pics after the jump. … Read more

Android users get less-capable Google voice search

A correction has been made to this story. See below for details.

As mentioned in an earlier post about the upcoming firmware update for T-Mobile's G1, the built-in Google search tool is getting voice-powered search. Like Google's rule-breaking, first-party iPhone search application, users can simply talk into the application to have their queries transcribed into text.

The big difference, however, is that users will need to begin a voice search by tapping the microphone icon instead of simply holding their phone up to their face.

Why is this you ask? The G1 is missing the oh-so-important proximity sensor, … Read more

T-Mobile confirms more Android, 3G devices in 2009

We've heard rumors of the T-Mobile G2, but we're always weary of such speculation until we get the official word from the carriers or cell phone manufacturer. However, the likelihood of a T-Mobile G1 successor is high and now, it's all but just been about confirmed by T-Mobile.

In an interview with Fierce Wireless, Neville Ray, T-Mobile's senior VP of engineering, revealed that the carrier is planning to release more 3G-capable smartphones and Google Android devices in 2009. "As the year progresses there will be a significant number of HSPA-capable smartphones. We will be launching … Read more

Opera Mini 4.2 shakes off its Android beta

The final release of Opera Mini 4.2 for Google Android adds regular features of the Java browser that were disabled in its November beta version. Think more of a mechanic tightening up loose nuts and bolts, rather than operating on engine guts, and you've got the premise.

Available starting Wednesday in the Android Market, Opera Mini 4.2 for Google Android now lets you upload and download files, save pages, and zoom in and out in response to a double tap.

You'll also be able to enter URLs directly into the address bar--instead of having to go … Read more

Fully Equipped: Time to ditch Windows Mobile?

For all the talk there's been about Microsoft's big Vista problem, much less has been made of its smaller operating system, Windows Mobile, which has some major problems of its own. Truth be told, I'm a longtime Windows Mobile user and I have to say it's been a frustrating ride. There are things I really like about the OS--and things I find really irritating. However, the frustration stems from the fact that every time I think it's really going to turn a corner, Windows Mobile continues to disappoint. And I'm seriously considering giving up … Read more
