Amazon set to introduce new Kindles at September 6 event?

We'd been expecting new Kindles to be unveiled almost any day, and now that day has been set -- Amazon has sent out invites for a press conference in Santa Monica, Calif., on the morning of September 6.

While it's unclear just what Amazon will roll out, it's a good bet we'll see a new Kindle Fire (or maybe even multiple Fires) and an e-ink Kindle with a built-in lighting option.

New Kindles: What to expect Back in late June, a source told CNET that the next Kindle Fire would have a camera and physical volume-control … Read more

How tweets reveal where you live

Monday's top-story rundown knows where you live:

Just when you think it's safe to tweet, here comes WeKnowYourHouse.com. The site is a social media experiment designed to show how easy it is for tweets to be used against you. If a Twitter user has location turned on, and they send a message with the word "home" in it, then the site will display it along with a Street View image of the location. Similar to PleaseRobMe.com, it showcases how some users may not be aware of how much information they are sharing.

Samsung invite suggests Galaxy Note 10.1 for August 15

Samsung has just confirmed one of my predictions for its now less-mysterious August 15 product launch in New York: the product in question is definitely a tablet.

CNET's invitation to the unveiling depicts an outline of a device with tablet dimensions in casual, artistic lines. That bolsters my belief that we'll be seeing a U.S. release of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, a full-fledged tablet that will make use of a stylus to interact with productivity and creativity tools. (Hence the doodles on the invitation.)

I first saw the Galaxy Note 10.1 at Mobile World … Read more

Twitter wants to be a bigger part of live events

Twitter is trying to do more than just spotlight trending stories and events -- it's trying to be part of the spotlight as well.

Dick Costolo, the microblogging company's CEO, told The Wall Street Journal that Twitter was ramping up its effort to help users sort out tweets surrounding major, live events by increasing its presence associated with the event. That effort is embodied by a partnership Twitter has formed with NBCUniversal to create a page that would corral millions of tweets sent by athletes, fans, and TV personalities during the Olympics in London.

Facebook highlights weddings with new feature

Sometimes it can be easy to miss a friend's engagement or wedding announcement on Facebook's News Feed. So the social network has decided to do something about this.

Facebook announced today a new feature called "Weddings and Celebrations." Similar to the birthday feature, the weddings and celebrations feature shows friends' status on the top right-hand side of the page once they change it to "married" or "engaged."

Here's what a Facebook spokesperson told CNET in an e-mail:

Facebook has become a unique way people share and congratulate friends around exciting life … Read more

Facebook revamps Events with Calendar and List views

What started out as a Facebook hackathon project has led to the social network's new-fangled Events page design.

Starting today, Facebook is rolling out its redesigned Events page, which comes with Calendar and List views. Now users can see birthdays, parties, RSVPs, and all other events up to several months in advance of the current date.

Spearheaded by Facebook software engineer Bob Baldwin, who created the homepage Events permalink at an earlier hackathon, the new Events design was fashioned to make it easier for users to organize their events, make plans, and see their friends' birthdays.

Join us Monday for Microsoft's mystery event

Microsoft is holding a special event on Monday, which rumors now peg as a tablet.

CNET will be there to bring you news live, from the scene -- that is, once Microsoft says where it is.

By all appearances, Microsoft has thrown the event together at the last minute. The company sent out invites to press just on Thursday, with the venue unspecified, aside from a very general "Los Angeles." We'll know exactly where we're conglomerating just a few hours before it starts.

Rumor has it the company will debut its own tablet, running its Windows … Read more
