Designers attempt to build a better Bugatti (concept car Friday)

The Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 sits as a halo car among halo cars, but the 5-year-old aesthetic of the 1,001-horsepower supercar is starting to look a bit long in the tooth. But with the exception of the awkwardly styled 16C Galibier concept, Bugatti seems content to trot out variants and special editions of the same Veyron for the last few car show seasons, leaving the rest of us to speculate as to the nature of the hypercar of the next decade.

Enter Racer X Design. This independent auto design team has taken the major design cues of the … Read more

BMW's blending form factors again with Gran Coupe concept

With its Gran Turismo, BMW took the 5-Series sedan and beefed it up into something of an SUV/wagon hybrid. With the Gran Coupe concept, the automaker has done the opposite to its 7-Series, carving away at the upright proportions of the sedan and leaving us with a very sexy and coupelike profile.

Revealed at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show, it's unclear whether the Gran Coupe is a design study for an upcoming BMW four-door coupe that will challenge the likes of the Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide for your people hauling dollars or a thinly veiled sneak … Read more

The Volkswagen NCC concept debuts at Detroit auto show

In continuation of my current video blog-post series concerning concept vehicles making their debuts a month ago at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, today I present a short but sweet video about Volkswagen's most recent foray into the e-car genre. And here it is, making its debut at the 2010 NAIAS is the VW New Compact Coupe concept as on display at the Cobo Arena in Detroit this last January.

The new Volkswagen NCC is reportedly a production-ready hybrid car that utilizes both traditional fuel energy as well as emerging electronic technology to propel this vehicle. … Read more

All I want for Christmas: The 1955 Cadillac Coupe De Ville

One of the first albums I owned was a Chuck Berry greatest hits compilation wherein the very first song, "Maybelline," name checked the Cadillac Coupe De Ville as the ride of choice of Berry's muse within the song. "Maybelline" was a hit in 1955, so even at a preteen age I became interested in Caddys from the '50s, especially the 1955 model that I imagine Maybelline in while sitting "at the top of the hill." I've never had the fortune of owning or even driving a 1955 Cadillac Coupe De Ville, so … Read more

Check out the BMW Concept ActiveE

Here's a look at the BMW Concept ActiveE. The all-electric car is based on the 1-series coupe. Unlike the demonstration in this promo video, the batteries don't pop in like a toy, but they will be located where the gas tank would normally go. Look for the ActiveE next month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Tuners embrace Hyundai Genesis at SEMA

Last year, Hyundai was all about the Genesis sedan at the 2008 SEMA Show. For 2009, the newer and sportier Genesis Coupe steps to the forefront for its share of the spotlight. Hyundai had no fewer than four Coupes in its booth and there were dozens more scattered across the rest of the show floor. If that's not enough to convince your that Hyundai's got a hit on its hands, we're not sure what will.

Among Hyundai's offerings were the wild midengine V-8 RM460 Genesis Coupe and the mild Hennessey Tuning School Coupe. Also in the … Read more

Hyundai prices Genesis R-Spec $3K less than Track model

We knew that a stripped down version of the Genesis Coupe 2.0T was coming. We knew that it would be dubbed "R-Spec." Now, we know that it's going to cost $23,750, $3,000 cheaper than the fully loaded 2.0T Track model.

The R-Spec features all of the performance of the Track model. Under its hood is a 210-horsepower turbocharged engine that puts power to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission and Torsen limited-slip differential. (Hyundai's five-speed automatic transmission is not available on the R-Spec.) The R-Spec also features the same Brembo … Read more

GReddy gives the Genesis Coupe a boost

When Hyundai announced that it would be debuting a 2-liter turbocharged version of its rear-wheel driven Genesis Coupe, I thought to myself, "The tuner crowd is going to go crazy over this."

Not even a year later, it appears that I was correct. Case in point, GReddy performance parts will be bringing a tuned-up Genesis Coupe 2.0T--dubbed the "GReddy X-Gen Street Genesis Coupe"--to the 2009 SEMA Show packed to the gills with performance parts and spinning its flywheel to the tune of 350-horsepower.

Bear in mind that the stock Genesis 2.0T packs only … Read more

Art car inspiration

To commemorate Infiniti's 20th anniversary, Infiniti Canada collaborated with Cirque du Soleil and Montreal artist Heidi Taillefer to create a one-of-a-Kind, Cirque-inspired Infiniti G Coupe. The intricate design was hand-painted over a period of a month and was unveiled last week at the 14th Annual Canadian Art Gallery Hop Gala. The anniversary vehicle will be displayed at events and galas over the next few months and will ultimately be auctioned off for charity.
