A terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day for @FiredBigBird

Twitter memes can come out of nowhere and take the world by storm. Such was the case last night with the creation of @FiredBigBird, an account started in apparent protest of Mitt Romney's promise in the presidential debate to axe PBS' funding.

Quickly rocketing to more than 20,000 followers, @FiredBigBird was the Big Bird-related ID of choice for "Sesame Street" fans upset at the Republican presidential nominee's threat to the TV network and the tall, yellow feathered star of that hit kids show.

But today was not such a good day for @FiredBigBird. Only hours … Read more

On Twitter, PBS stands up to Romney after 'Big Bird' quip

Proving a point that Twitter made yesterday that the microblogging service gives brands a powerful way to build loyalty and find new customers, PBS today purchased a promoted tweet tied to one of the hottest terms to come out of last night's presidential debate, "Big Bird."

According to BuzzFeed, the purchase comes as a response by the network to Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's suggestion that he would cut funding to PBS as a way of reducing government spending, despite his personal affinity for Big Bird, one of the main characters on the hit PBS children'… Read more

KitchenAid tweet about Obama's dead grandma causes a stir

KitchenAid is not a United Nations program to help people in faraway, impoverished places obtain designer kitchens.

Instead, it's a company that offers you "more ways to make it your way" in the kitchen.

How odd, then, that it should have inserted a rather blunt knife into tonight's presidential debate.

For the company's Twitter feed was adorned with this musing: "Obamas gma even knew it was going 2 b bad! 'She died 3 days b4 he became president'. #nbcpolitics."

The "gma" is not "Good Morning America" but grandma.

Game on! Obama, Romney debate to stream on Xbox Live

There's plenty of places online to watch and kibitz over tonight's presidential debate -- CNN.com, Twitter, YouTube, and many more. But one place offering live streaming and interactive features might surprise you: Xbox Live.

Usually known as a place for teenage boys to spend hours playing games like the latest Halo, or for people to watch Netflix streaming movies, the popular service will offer tonight's debate between President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, and is accentuating it with live interactive polling.

On the official Xbox site today, Microsoft touted its presentation of the … Read more

Twitter launches dedicated presidential debate page

Whether you're a political junkie or someone just starting to pay attention to next month's presidential election, tonight's first debate between President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is sure to provide tons of conversation fodder. And Twitter wants to be right in the middle of it.

Already, Twitter has dispatched members of its @gov team to Denver, where they plan to monitor the debate from up close and keep track of how the massive Twitter user base responds to each and every barb, attack, evasion, and even the occasional thoughtful answer. And to help … Read more

Obama and the iPhone: No common ground?

Agreement in politics seems about as common as subtlety in Charlie Sheen.

The media find glee in reporting the latest skirmish, the latest name-calling, the latest tit-for-tit. Who can be surprised, then, that recent reports suggest the President and the iPhone simply don't see eye to ear?

As the Washington Times dialed it in, the President was in Port St. Lucie, Fla. a couple of days ago and decided to call some campaign workers.

Marvin Nicholson, his trip director, offered up his own iPhone for the task, one that became a little more arduous than some might have imagined.… Read more

Obama DNC speech triggers record 52,757 tweets per minute

President Barack Obama has set a new record, at least on Twitter.

The president's speech at the Democratic National Convention yesterday lit up the Twittersphere with 52,757 tweets per minute, a new record for the micro-blogging site, Twitter has revealed.

Overall, the DNC has generated heavy traffic on Twitter. From the starting festivities on Tuesday to the closing events last night, more than 9.5 million tweets about the convention have made the rounds. The final day saw around 4 million tweets alone, according to Twitter, many of them sent during Obama's speech.

The 4 million one-day … Read more

Clint Eastwood's RNC Obama chair gets own Twitter account

You know that wooden chair Clint Eastwood was talking to during tonight's speech at the Republican National Convention? It already has its own Twitter account. At least two actually.

For those who might have missed it (but expect to hear plenty about it during upcoming RNC post-mortems), the iconic action actor spent part of his moment in the convention spotlight chatting (transcript) with an empty chair that was supposed to represent President Obama. And if presidents can have their own Twitter accounts, why can't chairs that are standing in as presidents?

Invisible Obama (bio: Stage left of Clint Eastwood) sent out its first Tweet at about 6:20 p.m. PT. It's been busy tweeting since: "The GOP built me." "When Mitt Romney says 'Mr. Chairman', do you think he's referring to me?" … Read more

Obama answers live questions on Reddit, crashes servers

U.S. President Barack Obama briefly took to Reddit today to do one of the popular social news site's AMA or "ask me anything" sessions.

The interview, which kicked off just after 1 p.m. Pacific and lasted roughly an hour, quickly brought the site to its knees.

Ahead of the overload, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian confirmed that President Obama was legitimately participating in the event, adding that the questions were being answered from Charlottesville, Va., where Obama is currently campaigning for a second term.

The format allows any registered Reddit users to ask questions, and the … Read more

Obama to NASA: I want to know about Martians right away

With the Olympics still in midstride, and with the arrival of the always exciting NFL exhibition games, you might perhaps have missed that a spacecraft landed on Mars a few days ago to express our human curiosity.

President Obama, however, has made it very clear that, should little beings be found out there, they will immediately become his top priority.

Indeed, in a phone call today with the Curiosity team, the President revealed that the first question he is being asked about the mission is whether Martians have already been found.

One can imagine that, even if they had been … Read more
