First new iPad finds Australia buyer

Apple's latest iPad is now out in the world--Australia, to be specific.

The buyer of the very first new iPad is one David Tarasenko, who snagged the white 64GB iPad Wi-Fi + 4G model at a midnight launch at the flagship Telstra store on George Street in Sydney.

Along with Australia, the new iPad will initially be sold in--this is the worldwide chronological order, more or less--Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore (see photos at end of post), Germany, Switzerland, France, the U.K., and the U.S., along with Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Sales are set to … Read more

Tech college's beautiful recruitment horror movie

They're different in Australia. This is largely a good thing.

In advertising, too, the country has a tradition of breaking boundaries-- or merely, perhaps, of not noticing them.

Please therefore bathe in (and after) this stunning recruitment ad for the Central Institute of Technology in Western Australia.

Perhaps its location is somewhat forbidding for some. So the Institute (as far as I can judge, this is entirely for real) has created this indescribable (in a good way) movie to help potential applicants get over their inhibitions.

It features Henry and Aaron, two gentlemen who might not be easily accepted … Read more

The 404: 972: Where we pre-game for CES

Our favorite Australian, Ty Pendlebury, joins us on this last 404 episode before the main event of technology begins--otherwise known as CES.

Ty gives his opinion on what will be the hottest tech from the show this year, and it looks like OLED will be big. Already some manufacturers like LG have announced massive 55-inch OLED screens, skipping a few sizes in between. While recent HDTV technology like 120Hz has been questionable when it comes to image quality, the near-perfect black levels of OLED screens just might have you interested in buying a new HDTV again. Ty warns that the prices aren't anywhere close to what we've been accustomed to lately.

AVN also won't be going on at the same time as CES this year, so that's a disappointment. We also take a few voice mails, but we want to let you know that we love to hear your feedback when we get to Vegas. So please call us and leave us a message at (866) 404-CNET. In the meantime, we're packing our bags and getting ready for a slew of hopefully unforgettable shows.… Read more

The 404 966: Where it's all the same in the end (podcast)

CNET's newest TV editor, Ty Pendlebury, joins us on today's episode for a short lesson in Australian holidays and colloquialisms!

Today we're talking about another billionaire bitten by the space travel bug, even though Jeff seems reluctant to travel in outer space.

We'll also bug Ty to tell us why the FCC doesn't care about eardrums, and he'll join us throughout the second half where we'll premiere a new geek speed-dating show on TLC.

Also, be sure to tune in tomorrow to hear us announce the winners of Target's video voice mail competition. Two winners will get their choice of an Xbox 360/Kinect Bundle or an iPad 2!… Read more

Dishing up a moon landing from Down Under

As the four stamps in my passport can attest, Australia is my travel destination of choice.

The only problem is that with such an immense place, even a two-week trip will show you only a corner of the country. So when an Aussie friend suggested that during a recent visit, I take a road trip to the small town where he was born, I jumped at the chance. And when I learned that the town was Parkes, I got even more excited. … Read more

Australia court lifts ban on Galaxy Tab sales

Samsung was given the go-ahead to launch the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia today after that country's High Court ruled that it would not hear Apple's application for special leave to reinstate the ban on the controversial tablet.

Galaxy Tab faces further delay in Australia

Australians won't see the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet next week, because the High Court today extended the order that sees the ban on the device remain in place until next December 9 for the purpose of an expedited special-leave hearing.

The decision means that Samsung's win over Apple on Wednesday in the Federal Court of Australia has turned into a bittersweet victory, with the extension meaning that the Korean gadget makers hurried plans to launch the Galaxy Tab 10.1 before Christmas have been thrown into disarray.

Samsung told the court that it had planned a &… Read more

Judges overturn Galaxy Tab ban in Australia

The Federal Court of Australia has overturned the preliminary injunction against the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in a stunning verdict read to the court this afternoon.

The unanimous decision made by Federal Court Justices John Dowsett, Lindsay Foster, and David Yates ordered that the injunction made by Justice Annabelle Bennett be overturned, allowing the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to be released in Australia.

However, Apple legal counsel Stephen Burley then sought a stay of the orders handed down by Justice Foster so that an appeal against the overturning of the injunction could be heard before the High Court … Read more
