U.K. police arrest teen with alleged LulzSec ties

A U.K. teenager has been charged with five criminal offenses in connection with computer crimes associated with the LulzSec hacking group.

According to London police, Jake Davis, an 18-year-old man, was charged yesterday with gaining unauthorized access to a computer system, encouraging and assisting criminal offenses, and conspiracy to carry out a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on the Web site of the U.K.'s Serious Organized Crime Agency. He has also been charged with two other counts of conspiracy, both tied to the U.K.'s Computer Misuse Act.

SF police arrest suspect in trashing of Airbnb rental

A 19-year-old woman was arrested late last month in connection with an investigation into the theft and trashing of property from an apartment that had been rented out via a Web site rental service, San Francisco police confirmed to CNET today.

The arrest stems from an incident a San Francisco woman blogged about on June 29. The woman, who goes by EJ, wrote that she rented her apartment out to a stranger through the Airbnb site and returned home to find her place trashed and her jewelry, electronics, money, and other valuables missing. Tea Party leader arrested on piracy charges

A leader of a South Carolina Tea Party group has been arrested for allegedly selling pirated software.

Anthony Trinca, 61, is accused of selling versions of Microsoft Office, Windows, Adobe Photoshop, and Rosetta Stone language programs that were counterfeit, news site TG Daily reported today, one of several outlets to write about it. Trinca, president of the Grand Strand Tea Party, was arrested on Tuesday after someone to whom he allegedly sold software resold some of it and refused to give a refund when a buyer insisted it was pirated, according to the police report. … Read more

U.K. police say they've arrested LulzSec's 'Topiary'

The British Metropolitan Police said today that they have arrested a 19-year-old who uses the nickname "Topiary" and is believed to be a key member of the LulzSec hacking group.

"The man arrested is believed to be linked to an ongoing international investigation into the criminal activity of the so-called 'hacktivist' groups Anonymous and LulzSec, and uses the online nickname 'Topiary,' which is presented as the spokesperson for the groups," Scotland Yard said in a statement. FBI arrests 16 in Anonymous hacking investigation

Sixteen people were arrested in the United States today in connection with hacking attacks by the Anonymous group of online activists, as well as one person in the U.K. and four people in the Netherlands, the U.S. Department of Justice said.

An indictment filed last week in San Jose, Calif., names 14 people accused of conspiring to intentionally damage protected computers at PayPal last December in retribution for PayPal suspending WikiLeaks' account to prevent supporters from donating to the whistleblower site. London police charge alleged LulzSec hacker

London's Metropolitan Police announced today that it has charged Ryan Cleary with five counts of violating British law in regard to cyberattacks.

Cleary, 19, of Essex was arrested yesterday in connection with a series of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks allegedly carried out by the Internet hacking ring LulzSec.

The charges include allegations that he launched DDoS attacks against the Serious Organized Crime Agency, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, and the British Phonographic Industry. (Click here for a full list of the charges.)

For several months, hackers have been having a heyday taking down Web sites and leaking data from compromised servers with victims ranging from the CIA and U.S. Senate to Sony, Citigroup and the Turkish government. (A growing list of attacks is here).

LulzSec IDs 'snitches' in accused hacker's arrest

Hacker group LulzSec has posted the names of two people it accuses of assisting in helping track down a teen suspected of being the notorious group's mastermind.

The post, signed by "LulzSec Security" and addressed to "FBI & other law enforcement clowns," includes the two men's home addresses as well as aliases, IM screen names, IP addresses, and in one case their phone number and date of birth.

LulzSec suspect arrested in U.K., reports say

A 19-year-old U.K. man has been arrested on suspicion of hacking and online attacks, the U.K.'s Metropolitan Police announced this morning.

Last night's arrest was part of "a pre-planned intelligence-led operation" that also involved cooperation with the FBI, according to the Metropolitan Police. Following the arrest, the man was brought to a London police station where he is currently in custody for questioning.
