Road Trip Pic of the Day, 6/22: What is this?

Update (Wednesday, 9:40 p.m. PST): Tuesday's answer--which 32 of you got--is a view of Grand Tetons National Park, north of Jackson, Wyoming, from the east side of Jenny Lake. Thanks to all who played, and please come back tomorrow.

These are some amazing mountains, some of the most visited in the United States. In some ways, they may look quite normal. But don't doubt how special they are.

Have you been there? If so, you'll surely recognize them. But even if you've never been there, you may still recognize them. Either way, I want … Read more

There are bridges, and there are bridges. This is one of the most stunning I've ever seen. It's also special to the community where it's located.

Update (Wednesday, 9:34 p.m.): The answer to today's challenge is the Bacteria Mats, along Yellowstone National Park's Fountain Paint Pots Trail. Almost everyone who responded knew it was Yellowstone, but I needed more specificity. As I wrote when I visited there last year, "This is actually a large collection of thermophiles--heat-loving microorganisms--that, according to the National Park Service, 'usually form the ribbons of color like you see here. The green, brown and orange mats are mostly cyanobacteria, which can live in waters as hot as 167 degrees Fahrenheit.'" If you weren't the winner, … Read more

Road Trip Pic of the Day, 6/14: What is this?

Update (Monday, 5:56 p.m.): The three parts of the answer I was looking for are as follows. 1. It's a Boeing VC-137B. 2. It's located at the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona. 3. It is a notable plane because it was used to fly the hostages home to the United States from Iran in 1981. And that's why its nickname is "Freedom One." Amazingly, though I got dozens and dozens of responses--by far the most for any Picture of the Day challenge so far--just three people got all three parts … Read more
