Brains behind Hulu leaves NBC

George Kliavkoff, the man who helped draw up the blueprint for a string of successful digital media services--from Hulu to Major League Baseball Advance Media--is leaving NBC Universal at the end of the year, CNET News has learned.

After a little more than two years as NBC's chief digital officer, Kliavkoff says he has accomplished the goals he set for himself and the company's digital unit when he joined in August 2006. He is taking time off before jumping into his next project.

Hulu enjoys first birthday, brags about its success

Hulu, the free video streaming service backed by NBC Universal and Fox, announced that it's celebrating its first birthday Wednesday, and along with that celebration, it released some internal survey results to give users an update on where the service stands today.

Much of the data Hulu provided comes from a survey it commissioned from July 2008 to August 2008, as well as an online study in October 2008 that features results from 2,500 adults over the age of 18.

Boxee adds support for Hulu, CBS video

On Monday Boxee, the Mac, Linux, and Apple TV-only Xbox Media Center derivative, announced the immediate support of video programming from Hulu and CBS. Users are now able to access the entirety both services catalogs of movies and TV shows through Boxee's interface. I spent the greater part of last night giving it a spin and while not perfect, it's off to a tremendous start.

PS3 firmware 2.50 adds support for Flash 9--but don't expect glitch-free Hulu viewing

Sony rolled out the latest firmware update for the PS3 (version 2.50) in the past few hours, available to all as a free download. The main additions, as reported on the official Sony Europe PS3 forums, are as follows:

>> Flash 9 support added to Web browser.

>> Improved Bluetooth headset support.

>> In-game screenshot capture tool (for future titles).

>> Improved user interface for PS3 Trophies.

>> Thumbnails added to video search.

>> Direct Information Board links to PlayStation Store.

>> Power save mode (automatic shut-off after predetermined downtimes).

Diggnation, now on Hulu

Everyone's favorite beer drinking techies, Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht, are now breaking down Digg's weekly top stories on Hulu with their wildly popular show, Diggnation. Thanks to a deal between Revision3 and Hulu, announced back in May, Diggnation is now featured on Hulu, alongside popular mainstream shows, such as Heroes and SNL.

While Diggnation has gained immense cult popularity, its availability on Hulu could help bring it to an even larger, more mainstream audience. Hulu (along with other online video sites) has definitely played a role in bringing even more popularity to shows in the past, with prime examples being the current It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and a renewed interest in the dearly departed Arrested Development. By putting this content in front of the eyes of a lot of potentially new viewers and allowing them to get into shows that they may never have seen before, these shows have been able to broaden their audiences.

Saturday Night Live helped make YouTube famous, and Tina Fey's recent appearances have led to big traffic spikes at NBC.com and Hulu.
