Microsoft recasts legal team for Yahoo bid

There are a lot of moving parts in Microsoft's unsolicited buyout bid for Yahoo. One of the latest arose last week when the software giant switched its legal team back to its old standby, Sullivan & Cromwell, from Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, which dropped out as legal adviser due to a conflict with another client.

With the deadline fast approaching for Microsoft to name an opposition slate to Yahoo's board of directors, chances are that the software giant is looking at corporate governance experts, academics, bean counter types, and former or retired Internet executives.

Citysearch syndication deal: AOL and IAC's Valentine's Day hookup

InterActiveCorp chair Barry Diller recently went on the record saying that he wouldn't buy AOL unless somebody handed it to him for free. But that doesn't rule out content partnerships: AOL announced Thursday that it has formed a partnership with Citysearch, the IAC-owned business directory.

Digsby links all IMs with e-mail, Facebook, MySpace

If you're the type of person who communicates with friends, co-workers, relatives, and such via several different IM services, e-mail, and Facebook--and you know you are--software could soon offer you one of the cleanest ways ever to link them all together.

The software, called Digsby, went into private beta Tuesday, and its goal is to give people a way to organize their contacts from Yahoo Messenger, AOL IM, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber, and Windows Live Messenger, as well as e-mail, Facebook, and MySpace.com into a single client.

AOL gets widgety with Goowy acquisition

AOL announced on Monday that it has purchased Goowy Media, a company that has created technology for widget creation and analytics reporting. AOL has been partnering with Goowy since early in 2007; financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

To consumers, Goowy is best-known as the parent company of Yourminis, a widget creation and discovery engine.

It's clear that Yahoo is struggling against Google, and it's clear that Microsoft wants nothing more than to be important in the online services world. But the combination of these two behemoths, neither of whom have been particularly innovative with technology or customer acquisition of late, is the next AOL/Time Warner debacle.

Does anyone think that the merger of AOL and Time Warner was a success? Does the marriage of two companies that have no clear strategies ever make sense?

Microsoft hasn't proven that it can take advantage of this scale of web property and has wasted a huge amount of time and dollars with all the Live.com junk.
