PageMaker 6.5 troubleshooting

If you update to PageMaker 6.5, be sure to study the Read Me file that comes with it. There are some important troubleshooting issues covered there. Here are two particularly noteworthy examples:

a. If you use System 7.5.3, there is a conflict between Adobe Type Manager 4.0 and the Apple LaserWriter 8.4.0, 8.4.1, and 8.4.2 drivers: your system may crash when you attempt to change a printer in the Chooser. To solve this, use a different driver or use Adobe Type Manager Deluxe 4.0.

b. Most Fax drivers require … Read more

StyleScript and desktop printing conflict

A reader reports a problem printing with Mac OS 7.6 installed, using StyleScript and a DeskJet 855 with background printing on. The problem did not occur with System 7.5.5. The reader contacted GDT and received the following reply:

"StyleScript was not intentionally designed to work with Apple's desktop printing software, but because we follow Apple's design principals, StyleScript worked with the original desktop printing software. Apple has since released a new version of the desktop printing software that will only work with Apple printers. Ourselves, like HP, Epson and Canon, can not make desktop … Read more

Mac OS 7.6 and QuickTime conflict

The April 3 Information Alley reports:

"Apple has discovered an issue that can cause a system crash when running Mac OS 7.6 and applications using QuickTime. Although this issue can be encountered using any application which uses QuickTime, it will most likely be encountered when using high end video editing programs and large QuickTime files. Increasing the memory allocation for the application may help avoid this. This issue occurs only with Mac OS 7.6; it does not occur with System 7.5.5 or earlier versions of system software. Apple is working on a solution."

PPP Menu problems

Regarding the new PPP Menu utility, mentioned last time:

a. Kevin Adey reports "I get a system error, "Finder - Unimplemented trap," when I try to close the box where you add/remove applications." Bill Brown had essentially the same problem.

Update: Drag original files instead of aliases. This should avoid the system error - according to both Daryl Cornutt and Adam Martin.

b. Jake Plotkin found that it caused problems accessing servers through aliases listed in the Recent Servers folder. Jay Duff had a similar problem: "Once PPP menu was installed, I hard lock … Read more

Saudi prince buys up Apple stock

This week's episode of "As the Apple Peels" has a Saudi Prince buying up $115 million dollars worth of Apple stock. The prince is described as a friend of Larry Ellison of Oracle, who last week announced his interest in a take-over of Apple. Meanwhile, Apple may be looking for a friendly merger (perhaps with Sun) to counter a possible Ellison take-over bid. MacWEEK has the details.

Apple policy shift on replacing Multiple Scan 15 monitors?

A couple of times previously, we have mentioned problems with the Apple Multiple Scan 15 Display. These problems are common enough that Apple has apparently adopted a new policy that makes it easier for users to get their defective monitor replaced. The word I have from an anonymous source is that any Multiple Scan 15 Display with the following symptoms will qualify for a factory-refurbished replacement monitor (regardless of warranty status): Color hue reverts to faded blue, pink, green, or yellow. Meanwhile, Apple is still trying to determine the exact cause of the problems.

Update: This policy shift probably does … Read more
