Apple Mac OS 8 Technote

If you intend to get into serious troubleshooting for Mac OS 8, run (don't walk) over to Apple's Developer World and download the draft copy of the special Technote on Mac OS 8. Yesterday's items on Apple hardware problems At Apple's request, I typically refrain from posting serial numbers in items such as the ones reported yesterday. However, since the numbers have now been posted elsewhere, I have amended yesterday's reports to include the numbers.

Netscape Communicator Secure Sockets glitch? Chris Macionski claims that Communicator's Secure Sockets Layer 2.0 is not compatible across platforms. NS3.0 and IE3.0 are fine, but NS4.0 for the Mac is not compatible. "I discovered this when trying to place orders on BMG and Valuedge (http://www.valueedge.com)."… Read more

Apple Multiple Scan 15 repair extension

I have received word that, starting August 1, 1997 and continuing through December 31, 1998, a repair extension program will be in place to fix a limited number of Apple Multiple Scan 15 displays (serial numbers in the range CJ532xxxxxx through CJ543xxxxxx) that display incorrect color tints regardless of the computer to which they are attached. Those within the affected serial range and having the symptom will qualify for a replacement monitor.

Macintosh Daily Journal publication suspended

I received the following note today from Matt Deatherage, Publisher of the excellent MDJ:

"While we've been preparing this week's Mac OS 8 issues, we've also been fighting a battle that's more or less completely unrelated to MDJ. We are unhappy to report that we have temporarily lost this battle, and as a result, GCSF, Inc. has lost all access to all computer systems, in this or any other location. Apple HP-built StyleWriter inkjet printers to be discontinued

Reports indicate that Apple Computer has announced its desire to discontinue their line of HP-built inkjet printers. Under the terms of the contract this means that the Master OEM Purchase Agreement between Apple and HP will be terminated on November 23,1997.

It appears that Apple plans to exit the inkjet printer market entirely.
