Week-end Updates: Speed Doubler 1.3.3 and more

a. Connectix has released Speed Doubler 1.3.3, an update for those who still have not updated to Speed Doubler 2.x (first spotted this on Version Tracker). It fixes a few bugs including: "Attempts to copy a folder into another folder inside the first are detected. Attempts to replace a folder with a folder inside the first are detected."

b. Fonts Manager has a very minor update (Mac OS 8 TrueType font suitcase 'Truth' now called 'Charcoal') to version 3.6.7.

c. Three utilities in the Download Library authored by Alessandro Levi Montalcini have been … Read more

File-sharing slow down: possible fixes

Regarding the previously reported slow down when file sharing a large volume, one reader queries whether "the user might inadvertently be sharing every file on their drive by checking the 'Share this volume' box for the large drive." If so, this might lead to the slow down. He also reminds readers of a standard technique for dealing with file-sharing problems: delete the invisible AppleShare PDS file (at the root level of your hard drive); it will get recreated (although you will have to reset your permissions) and might just fix the problem.

QuicKeys and WunderBar

Jean-Luc Warin reports a conflict between WunderBar and QuicKeys (QuicKeys Edit function no longer works). When he contacted CE Software (makers of QuicKeys) about it, they replied:

"We have not had reports of problems with ZMac's WunderBar, but the problem you have described does sound familiar. Although there has been no official testing done by us, it appears that WunderBar is actually manipulating the regular menus in some way. This type of control has been known to cause problems with QuicKeys, due in part because QuicKeys expects to have access to the menu commands, and when other software … Read more

U.S. Robotics modem redial problem: a solution?

Regarding a previously reported (scroll down a bit after going to this link to find the item) busy signal redial problem with U.S. Robotics Universal Modem Script, Kevin Purcell writes: "Put a comma at the end of the phone number. I'll bet that fixes the problem. Some Sportster modems don't detect the busy signal and report busy back to the computer unless some non-numeric character follows the number. This problem has plagued the 1141 series (Sportster Voice for Mac) modems. There is a newer version of the ROMs for the 1141 but I don't know … Read more

PowerCenter Pro and Adaptec card issues

a. This seems my week for reporting 'blinking question mark" startup problems. Kevin Callahan writes that he had this symptom with his Power Computing PowerCenter Pro clone - the model that ships with an Adaptec PCI card already installed - after he zapped the PRAM. The short-term solution was to reboot from his system CD-ROM and then reboot again from the internal drive. The long-term solution is to move the Adaptec card from the slot closest to the motherboard to the outside slot. Kevin says Power Computing confirmed this.

b. Meanwhile, Olivier Karfis had some email discussions with Chris … Read more

AppleVision 1710: yet another problem?

As if they didn't already have enough trouble, I have received several reports of yet another problem with the 1710 and 1710AV monitors. The symptom is similar to previously reported ones: on a warm boot, the monitor will not turn back on (the green power-on light does not even come on). The good news is that this is fixed easily enough by simply pressing the power button on the monitor off and back on again (previously reported problems of this sort often required the additional step of unplugging the monitor for about 10 minutes or so).

Text highlighting problem in Finder reported

In Apple's Discussion Forums, several people (for examples, click a, b, or c) are reporting a problem where highlighting file names in the Finder - so that you can edit the text - only lasts a few seconds before reverting to the unhighlighted form, often preventing you from finishing editing the text. So far, Apple is unable to duplicate the symptom (which similarly does not affect most users) and offers no definite solution. (Thanks, Kim Andersen)

Microsoft Explorer: problem saving cache files to a RAM Disk or ShrinkWrap image

A couple of readers have reported problems getting Explorer to save cache files to a RAM Disk or ShrinkWrap image - a technique used to minimize corruption problems that can occur if the cache files are saved to your disk. The symptom is that Explorer does not save the preference setting for the RAM Disk after a shut down. Reader Akua offers an explanation:

"Explorer 3.01 (as well as previous Explorer's I've run) saves the location of its cache folder by Volume-Reference. This is not recommended by Apple. This can cause the problem with saving cache … Read more

Large DIMMs problem on Power Mac 7300: Follow-up info

Regarding the previously reported problem with large DIMMs on Power Mac 7300s:

a. Chris Harmon (of Newer Technology) wonders if this is connected to the "famous 9500/200 problem." In that case, not interleaving the memory corrected the problem. The ultimate cause turned out to be a problem with the memory controller on the logic board. However, Chris writes: "Using memory built above the JEDEC standard also fixes the problem. Of course we offer such fine memory ourselves."

b. Andrew Harrow writes: "I have seen a similar problem with the 7200/120. With or without … Read more
