PrintGuard 1.0.5 is out. It is a control panel to alert users trying to print on previously identified network printers. Version 1.0.5 adds the possibility to reverse the function of PrintGuard.
DeskTape Pro 4.5 is out. It is a backup utility from Optima Technologies. This version is needed for Mac OS 8.1 and HFS compatibility. A free demo is available (thanks, Terrence Seaford.)
AppleTalk work-around explained Apple's Mac OS 8.1 Late Breaking Tips TIL discusses how to turn off AppleTalk for those cases where, even after apparently turning it off, you still get a "serial port in use" message (a problem previously covered here on MacFixIt). Alternatively, you can also set up Location Manager (or certain other third-party Control Strip modules, such as FruitSpeak) to switch settings.
Bill Fox, of For Macs Only, has also been covering this issue, in regards to avariety of clones and third-party CD-ROM drives.
Omar Shahine, who had reported this problem to me earlier, notes that this is not an Open Transport 1.3 problem. It is a more general problem with Mac OS 8.1. He also claims that this problem may not be restricted just to GV's 56K card.

Although it appears that there is no longer a PlayThrough option in the Mac OS 8.1 version of Monitors & Sound, you can work-around this by getting Neal Hickox's Sound Input Strip. It is a Control Strip module that allows you to toggle PlayThrough. (Thanks, Bob Van Burkleo and Mike Hulsey.)
