New TIL to officially open today

Apple's new Tech Info Library is about to officially open. Here's the statement from Apple:

"A new version of the Tech Info Library (TIL) is much easier to search and browse, and will be officially introduced at 12:00 PM CDT Wednesday, 18 June 97. The current WAIS based TIL will be removed on that date. We hope you will find that the new database will give you many of the features you have been asking for during the past year.

We are also moving the TIL to a new high speed network for faster customer access. … Read more

PureVoice bug confirmed

David de Graaf writes: "The current beta (b5) version of Qualcomm's PureVoice has a bug which leads to horrible sounds distortions on 6200s. Qualcomm is aware and promised a fix. They said it had something to do with the refusal of 6200 machine (and some others) to record in mono."

Update: Several readers report this same problem on 63xx machines.

Adobe Illustrator 7 tip: accessing Pantone colors

I cannot confirm this (as I do not yet have Illustrator 7), but Joe Ligotti wrote in with the following tip:

"In versions of Adobe Illustrator prior to 7.0, a Pantone color can be accessed by typing the Pantone number (after importing the Pantone color library and activating custom colors in the Paint Style palette). The new version appears to lack this capability, but there is an undocumented way to activate it. After opening the desired Pantone library off the Swatch Libraries menu selection, click on any color inside the Pantone palette with the Apple and Option keys … Read more

RAM Doubler and floppy disks not mounting: problem and solutions?

I have now received two reports that link RAM Doubler 2.0.1 to a sporadic problem with floppy disks not being recognized or mounted - especially after a cold boot.

Stephen Camidge found this on his Power Mac 7200 running Mac OS 7.6.1. Oddly, he found that it only occurred if the "4 font files installed by Adobe Acrobat Reader" were also present.

Howard Kong had this problem on a PowerCenter 150, running Mac OS 7.6 or 7.6.1. He confirmed that it happened even when RAM Doubler 2.0.1 was the … Read more

PowerBook 3400 modem problems: Too hot to handle?

Greg Hyra claims that at least some of the reported connection problems with the modems in PowerBook 3400s are due to the high internal temperature of the 3400 after it has been on for awhile. He writes that when his temperature control strip indicated that the temperature was 98 degrees (which was shortly after starting up), the modem worked. After awhile, the temperature moved up to 106 degrees. The modem then would not reconnect. "The only way it would work again was to put the machine to sleep and let the thermally-challenged modem cool off. This has proven to … Read more

PowerBook 3400 extension conflicts: a follow-up

Regarding the several conflicts noted last time:

a. CyberFinder and the loss of the Power key shut down message Dirk Munson (of Aladdin) writes: "This is an issue that we are aware of that only affects newer PowerBook models (PPC only I believe). Unfortunately, there is currently no fix available."

b. Type 10 errors when waking from Sleep Several readers (John David Dionisio was the first to email me on this) have confirmed that this problem only occurs when AppleTalk is active and Ethernet is selected as the Connection method (from the AppleTalk control panel). Keeping AppleTalk off … Read more

CFM-68K OSL 1.2 crashing bug: the fix is in for Mac OS 8

Awhile back, we posted an item about PointCast's discovery of a bug in the latest version (1.2) of ObjectSupportLib (a component of CFM-68K 4.0). We have now received some follow-up info on this subject from Tony Gentile (of PointCast):

"The bug causes system crashes to occur if CFM applications are quit in a different order than they were launched. Apple fixed the OSL 1.2 bug in Mac OS 8.0b5; we have confirmed the fix in our QA Lab. We have asked Apple to release a fix for pre-Tempo systems; they are currently investigating this, … Read more

Alert! Using HDT 2.0.6 to reformat (with multiple volumes) certain internal IDE drives may prevent further access to the driv

Rolf von Andrian reformatted the internal IDE drives of several Power Mac 4400 and Motorola 3000/180 machines - using FWB's Hard Disk Toolkit 2.0.6. Both models use Seagate ST31267A drives. He selected to make two partitions on each drive. After doing so, he tried to install system software on the drives from an external SCSI drive. However, the machines froze midway in each case. After this, he was unable to successfully start up the machines - even when using a bootable CD-ROM or floppy disk. The only way he could get the machines to boot was … Read more

a. Gear Box 1.0 Rockstar's Internet utility, Gear Box, is now out.

b. Adobe on troubleshooting Adobe has a page with some basic troubleshooting advice for dealing with system errors. (Thanks, Paul Amundson.)

c. AppleVision possible fix Michael Zwick reports that an Apple Support statement on Apple's Discussion Boards, recommends plugging the AppleVision monitor directly into a wall outlet - rather than to a multi-plug power strip - as a potential solution for the problem of the monitor not turning on after a restart. However, this is not likely to be the solution for all instances of … Read more
