Appearance Extension Patch (for those who prefer 2-D to 3-D)

Reader Dieder Bylsma likes Mac OS 8 but does not particularly like the 3-D icons that predominate throughout the desktop. Unfortunately, the icons are created via the Appearance Extension, which (as stated in the Mac OS 8 Technote just mentioned) cannot be de-installed. Dieder's solution was to patch the Appearance Extension to rid it of the 3-D icons, forcing the OS to revert back to the 2-D icons still built into the System and Finder files.

My guess is that most people will be happy to leave the 3-D icons in place. But if you want to rid yourself … Read more

Apple Mac OS 8 Technote

If you intend to get into serious troubleshooting for Mac OS 8, run (don't walk) over to Apple's Developer World and download the draft copy of the special Technote on Mac OS 8. (Thanks, Alexei Kosut.) It can get technical at times, but contains many juicy nuggets of information (some of which are also mentioned in the Mac OS 8 Read Me files). Apple Multiple Scan 15 repair extension

I have received word that, starting August 1, 1997 and continuing through December 31, 1998, a repair extension program will be in place to fix a limited number of Apple Multiple Scan 15 displays (serial numbers in the range CJ532xxxxxx through CJ543xxxxxx) that display incorrect color tints regardless of the computer to which they are attached. Those within the affected serial range and having the symptom will qualify for a replacement monitor.

Macintosh Daily Journal publication suspended

I received the following note today from Matt Deatherage, Publisher of the excellent MDJ:

"While we've been preparing this week's Mac OS 8 issues, we've also been fighting a battle that's more or less completely unrelated to MDJ. We are unhappy to report that we have temporarily lost this battle, and as a result, GCSF, Inc. has lost all access to all computer systems, in this or any other location. This leaves us unable to continue publication of MDJ, or even to respond to your E-mail queries.

We wish to stress that this is *not* … Read more
