AT&T applies lessons learned from iPad

CHICAGO--The Apple iPad has taught AT&T much about changing its business models for its connected device business, said AT&T Vice President David Haight during a speech today at the 4G World trade show here.

Haight admitted that the company has seen only modest adoption of embedded 3G service in laptops. The biggest barrier for most consumers is the two-year, $60 a month service contract. He said consumers would rather pay more for a device than be locked into a two-year service deal. Instead, he pointed to the success of the Apple iPad. On Monday, Apple said … Read more

Why I think Steve Jobs is lying

At yesterday's Apple earnings call, CEO Steve Jobs quelled rumors that the company was on the verge of producing a smaller 7-inch iPad to counter the arrival of such mini slates as Samsung's Galaxy Tab. He said that these devices were "tweeners" and would be dead on arrival. He scoffed that normal-size human fingers are simply too big to be able to accurately hit icons on a screen that size.

"Apple has done extensive user testing and we really understand this stuff," he said. "There are clear limits on how close you can … Read more

AT&T gets down to business with iPad

AT&T is pitching Apple's iPad tablet directly to businesses with a discounted wireless data plan, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

The move could help AT&T generate more revenue as the market for smartphone plans becomes saturated, the Journal said.

It could also--temporarily at least--increase the threat posed by Apple's mobile operating system to Research In Motion's market-leading BlackBerry Enterprise Server software.

Apple's iPhone is already catching up to RIM's BlackBerry in terms of security--until now one of the RIM device's key selling points. And though Apple … Read more

Galaxy Tab price, launch rumors start swirling

As we draw closer to the end of 2010, each of the four big wireless providers is expected to release its version of the Galaxy Tab. Announced last month, the 7-inch Android-based tablet has yet to see an official price tag or launch date from any U.S. carrier, but that may soon change as a handful of Tab rumors began swirling late last week.

First out of the gate was Sprint, which is said to be dropping the device on November 14 with a $399 price tag. Given the hardware inside, this isn't a terrible price for those … Read more

Sprint's Galaxy Tab rumored at $399 with contract

Update: CNET's full, rated review of the Samsung Galaxy Tab is now available.

Those of you who have been waiting for some glimmer of hope in the tablet wars will be pleased to hear the latest rumor on the Samsung Galaxy Tab. A source tipped off Boy Genius Report that the Sprint version of the Tab will go on sale November 14 (better late than never).

More importantly, the pricing seems reasonable (though not inspiring), speculated at $399 with a two-year contract, or $599 without an agreement.

The rumor doesn't state which capacity you'll get for that … Read more

Samsung boss hints at 10-inch Galaxy Tab

Samsung has offered a strong hint that there's a 10-inch version of the Android-powered Galaxy Tab in the pipeline. The 7-inch Tab has attracted loads of attention with its AMOLED touch screen, built-in high definition camera, and ability to make phone calls.

While discussing the availability of the Tab in Ireland, Samsung's local grand poobah Gary Twohig appeared to confirm that there would be different sizes. We could be putting two and two together and coming up with 10, however: although some reports have taken this to mean there will be a 10-inch version, the original report has … Read more

Remote connector

Windows' built-in Remote Desktop Connection utility is a bit basic; it offers few options, and multiple connections fill up the taskbar, making it awkward to switch among desktops. If you regularly access multiple remote machines or just want an improved remote desktop client, check out RD Tabs from Avian Waves. It uses a tabbed interface to manage open remote connections with a familiar functionality similar to current browsers, keeping everything in one spot. But it offers so much more than just better organization, with extra features like password encryption, remote terminal server management, connection thumbnails, and command line scripting.
