Cool stuff: Seagate contemplates 4G LTE for mobile storage hot spot

LAS VEGAS--When on the go, you want to stay connected at all times and carry as much data as possible without having to physically carry a lot, right?

Soon you'll be able to do just that.

Seagate revealed and demonstrated at CES 2012 the prototype of a product tentatively called the Personal Server 4G LTE Wi-Fi. This is basically a combination of what the company's GoFlex Satellite has to offer and a 4G LTE mobile hot spot in one compact box.

AT&T bets big on Microsoft-Nokia alliance and Windows Phone

Ralph de la Vega has a lot to say about Microsoft-Nokia and Windows Phone. Except for the name of the actual device.

Due to a quirk in the conference schedule, AT&T couldn't actually talk earlier today about the big, new 4G LTE smartphone from Microsoft and Nokia, the Lumia 900 (also known as Ace). The companies are planning to formally unveil the device later today at a conference hosted by Nokia.

Sprint confirms switch to LTE with Galaxy Nexus, LG Viper

LAS VEGAS--With a simple Web page on its site, Sprint today spilled more details on its already-promised switch to LTE and the first devices that would support it.

According to the page, the carrier will launch LTE and "improved 3G coverage" in the first half of this year in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Atlanta. The timing and choice of cities repeats earlier comments from CEO Dan Hesse, who promised during an investor conference last week that Sprint would launch LTE in up to 10 cities by the end of 2012.

AT&T strikes first with 4G LTE Windows Phones from Nokia, HTC

LAS VEGAS--AT&T customers, rejoice! The carrier just announced that the first 4G LTE Windows Phone smartphones are headed to the U.S. in the first half of the year.

HTC, Nokia, and Microsoft all joined AT&T on stage at the Developer Summit to introduce their devices to the crowd, starting with the HTC Titan II. The HTC Titan II holds the title of having the largest display of any global Windows Phone at 4.7 inches, and it also has a 16-megapixel (!!) camera.

Samsung Galaxy Note: AT&T's jumbo phone wants to make the stylus cool

LAS VEGAS--It was only a matter of time until Samsung announced the U.S. version of the Samsung Galaxy Note, the phone maker's largest smartphone to date.

AT&T introduces six new 4G LTE Android devices at CES

LAS VEGAS--AT&T is bulking up its 4G LTE lineup with five new Google Android smartphones and one Google Android tablet. All will operate over the company's upgraded network, the company said at a press event here today.

The new devices will be available in the first part of 2012, the company said.

The Galaxy Note is a 5.3-inch device with an HD Super AMOLED screen (1,280x800) that's supposed to offer sharp and clear images both indoors and outside. The Galaxy Note also features the S Pen technology, which allows users to input text via a pen. This allows users to sketch drawings, jot notes, or write e-mails and texts in their own handwriting. The Samsung Galaxy Note will be available in the coming weeks, AT&T said. But it hasn't released pricing information on it yet.

The Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD has a 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED screen, as well as a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. It's about 9.27 millimeters thick and will be available in coming months, AT&T said.… Read more

Deutsche Telekom scrambling for cash to keep T-Mobile competitive

Deutsche Telekom is trying to raise money to keep its T-Mobile USA unit competitive following AT&T's failure to acquire the unit.

The German telecom giant is looking to drum up billlions in cash by issuing bonds and possibly selling T-Mobile's cellular towers, says a story in today's Financial Times (registration required).

Deutsche Telekom is in line to pick up $3 billion in cash and $1 billion in spectrum space and roaming rights from AT&T as a break-up fee. But that still may not be enough to help T-Mobile compete against its three larger … Read more
