CNET Prizefight: Samsung Instinct vs. Apple iPhone 3G

Of all the iPhone competitors, the Samsung Instinct arguably comes closest to challenging Apple's device. With a similar design and a comparable feature set, the Instinct has the potential to keep Sprint customers from straying to AT&T. Not only does it offer some features the iPhone 3G lacks, but its slick interface is like nothing Samsung has shown us before. Yet, the iPhone 3G has plenty going for it. Its easy-to-use design and interface and outstanding media player continue to attract new AT&T customers in droves. That's why we pitted these two phones against … Read more

Cosmetic line eases HDTV complex(ion)

Even makeup has entered the age of high definition. To our surprise, Samsung recently teamed with makeup-services provider Make Up For Ever to present a workshop that paired makeup with HDTVs.

The rationale? The new demands of digital technology, where high definition tends to amplify details up to six times more than standard definition. This basically translates to talc-based makeup now accentuating, instead of hiding, those pimples, pigmentation, eyebags, enlarged pores and, horror of horrors, wrinkles when viewed on high-def TV.

This can be brutal not just for professional actors and actresses, but also for brides obsessed with their appearance … Read more

Samsung has released a firmware update to its 14MP GX-20 DSLR. The update is similar to the one released in June for its sister camera, the Pentax K20D.

Samsung Q1 Ultra shows businesses some love

These are tough times for the UMPC, whose promise of pocket-size, always-on computing has been overshadowed by the proliferation of cheaper Netbooks. But Samsung, one of the first companies to announce a UMPC back when the initiative was known simply as Origami, has continued to issue updates to its Q1 Ultra. The latest, announced Monday: the Q1U-CMXP, notable for its integrated HSDPA cellular modem, and the Q1UP-V, a Q1 Ultra Premium running Windows Vista Business.

The Q1U-CMXP is almost identical to the Q1 Ultra released last year, with the addition of a 3G cellular modem that's compatible with AT&… Read more

iPhone 3G battery results: Music and video

Our CNET Labs team has unveiled their battery performance results for music and video playback on the iPhone 3G. We've completed talk time testing and we'll be doing another round of audio and video tests with 3G disabled--but at least we have another piece of the puzzle to add to our review.

To give the test results some context, we also retested the first-generation iPhone, and simultaneously tested a comparable 3G multimedia phone, the Samsung Instinct. Apple's public tech specs claim the iPhone 3G is capable of up to 7 hours of video playback and 24 hours … Read more

Chipmaker paints bleak economic picture

Chartered Semiconductor, which builds chips for companies like IBM and Samsung, says it is looking at a bleak economic picture for the coming months.

Update: Infineon Technologies, a German chipmaker, announced Friday that it would lay off 3,000 workers due to the "levels of risk in the current market conditions."

Chartered CEO Chia Song Hwee issued a cautionary statement when the company announced earnings late Thursday afternoon. "We continue to be cautious about the worsening economic situation," he said, adding that Chartered is "dealing with the challenges of...crude oil price increases" and &… Read more

Samsung announces cheapest Blu-ray home theater system yet

Samsung was officially the first to offer up a home-theater-in-a-box system with Blu-ray (although Panasonic was right behind), but as you might expect, we found the $1,500 system a little overpriced for what it offered. Samsung has now announced a follow-up budget Blu-ray HTIB, the HT-BD2E, and at nearly half the price ($800), it has the potential to be a far more appealing product. Let's check out the key features, or at least what we know so far.

Key features of the Samsung HT-BD2E:

5.1 channel system, 800 watts total power Four satellite speakers, one center speaker … Read more

Samsung profits rise on strong handset sales

Samsung Electronics reported Friday that its second-quarter profits rocketed 51 percent, due in large part to a surge in cell phone sales.

The South Korean company, which sells TVs and other consumer electronics, electronic components, and mobile handsets, reported a profit of $2.12 billion on $18 billion worth of sales.

The company said the jump in profits came as it sold 45.7 million handsets during the quarter, a 22 percent hike in sales over the previous year. For the past year, Samsung has been gobbling up market share at the expense of its American rival Motorola. Last year, … Read more

Down the line: Smartphones

iPhone, schmiPhone. Now wait, don't go calling me an iPhone hater because I'm not. I'm just saying that there are a lot of other hot smartphones out there that deserve as much attention as Apple's starlet, and I've rounded up five of the hottest models.
