MacInTax install bug (and the solution)

From an Intuit support page for MacInTax Deluxe 1997, comes the answer to the question: "How do I resolve the message, Error creating file. 1008:5,-120' when installing MacInTax Deluxe?"

Answer: "You will receive this message if you selected Minimum Configuration while performing a Custom Install of MacInTax Deluxe. The solution is to do an Easy Install. If you don't have the room to do an Easy Install, you can run MacInTax directly from the CD. But, as Dave Reiser points out, this prevents you from using an updates that might be released.

From FWB: Problems with Hard Disk ToolKit on G3 Macintoshes equipped with Western Digital Hard Drives; HDT 2.5 to be released

Regarding previous reports: FWB writes: "Users have reported two problems with Hard Disk ToolKit version 2.0.6 when used on the latest G3 Macintoshes. The following is a summary of FWB's analysis of the problems:

The G3 Macs made available to developers prior to commercial release were equipped with Quantum Fireball 4.4 GB and 6.4 GB ATA hard drives. These systems were tested with Hard Disk ToolKit version 2.0.6 and our new version, Hard Disk ToolKit 2.5, and they functioned properly. New XCLAIM drivers address Quake issue

XCLAIM released new version 3.0 driver software for its XCLAIM VR and XCLAIM TV hardware. It has several bug fixes. Of particular note, in regard to previous items on MacFixIt, it "fixes MacQuake hang, and improves 3D mode support for RAVE version of MacQuake."

New version 2.1 driver software for XCLAIM 3D is also posted.

Utility updates

Jeremy's Control Strip Modules Release 1.7.3 fixes a resizing bug in the Temperature CSM.

GoMac version 1.4.4 has several bug fixes. For example, it now displays the Program Bar only if the Finder is running and Myth no longer crashes at startup.

The previously promised 9.4 driver for the HP DeskWriter 600 series is now out. (Thanks, Version Tracker)

Mac Home Journal web site additions

The Mac Home Journal is trying to beef up its web site. In the last few weeks it has made two notable additions:

Tech Support MacHome Journal and No Wonder have joined to create a page where you can get free, unlimited Mac tech support. They state: "Each question receives a tracking number (which is emailed to the sender), and the sender receives the answer(s) to his or her question(s) within 24 hours."

News headlines "MacHome Journal and MacTimes MacHound Headline News Website have merged to create MacHome Interactive News." It lists headlines with … Read more

ReadIt! incompatible with Epson scanner

Bob Dalley claims that ReadIt!OCR 6 does not work the Epson Expression636 scanner and Mac OS 8. "When I try to scan within ReadIt!OCR 6.0, after selecting the 'Epson TWAIN' in the Scanner Options menu, I get an error message saying 'ReadIt! is unable to access the selected scanner. Please check connections.'"

Bob adds: "After a couple of weeks talking to Olduvai technical support, they say that the ReadIt!OCR 6 program has a documented conflict with Epson's implementation of the TWAIN driver. They have no fix at this time. At this writing, … Read more

DiskEssentials follow-up: Total Recall replies

Kelly Leopard, of Total Recall, replies to our recent item on DiskEssentials.

a. Regarding reports of problems with DiskRX checking partitioned drives: Kelly says this has now been fixed with version 1.1.1. This is available as part of a Maintenance Pack update, available free to all registered users.

b. Regarding problems with SCSI cards, Kelly writes: "DiskEssentials Users Guide and our website states that the current version is not compatible with controller cards. We will be implementing compatibility in a future Maintenance Pack release."

StuffIt Deluxe issues: a reply from Aladdin

Regarding the two points mentioned in an item from last time, Dirk Munson (of Aladdin) offered the following:

a. The reported problem with multi-user serial numbers is true. They are currently working on a fix. However, note that "The code to recognize the 'DLXS' registration number is not a part of the installer. This is part of the StuffIt Deluxe application."

StuffIt Deluxe: Aladdin recommends disabling Magic Menu; update planned

Confirming issues we have previously described here ( a, b and c), Aladdin Technical Support has asked that we post the following:

"Aladdin Systems would like to respond to several reports of difficulties some users are experiencing with StuffIt Deluxe 4.5:

Some users have reported seeing a multi-colored patch appearing in the menu bar after selecting certain menu commands. A system crash may soon follow. Other users have experienced a Finder quit or a series of Finder quits.
