Among the new features is the idea of "checking in" to a local businesses, which will let you alert your Yelp friends that you're there--complete with a push notification. Yelp will also reward repeat visitors by denoting them as "regulars," with the most often visiting party getting a special badge.
We've always liked Google's Mobile App for BlackBerry.
A recent update this week to version 3.5 adds an unexpected and interesting new feature--searching through your phone's e-mail and address book as well as the Web--when you type or speak a name into the search bar.
Although the BlackBerry does have separate search functionality for the address book and in-box, Google's search app rolls them into one, and then tucks local phone search neatly into its free Web search app.
NonLinear Software used the music show of the National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, Calif., this week to unveil its newest product, AppOmator.
Among others, many individuals and companies in the music industry see opportunities in building their own additions to the 100,000 app-strong App Store. Creating an app that suits one's business goals or personal tastes, however, isn't necessarily easy. While some Web services provide templates to build an app, NonLinear'sdesktop application lets users fully customize their app.
Using AppOmater, you can add custom graphics for the background and menu transitions, as … Read more

A new app was released this week by Apple for customers using its MobileMe online service. It follows in the footsteps of the previously released MobileMe iDisk utility and Apple's handy Find My iPhone.
MobileMe Gallery gives users the ability to view their gallery of movies and photos from either an iPhone or an iPod Touch. After installing the app, you log in with your MobileMe username and password and you have full access to all galleries attached to your account, whether they are public or private.
You can use multitouch gestures to flick left and right to move through photos, pinch to zoom, or rotate your iPhone or iPod Touch to view them in landscape mode. You can view or watch your friends' gallery photos and videos and share links to your own albums from an iPhone. An offline mode allows you to access previously viewed photos when not connected to the Internet.
A vast improvement on its BlackBerry predecessor, Google Mobile App is primarily a search app that also serves as a portal to other Google Web apps. It's anchored by a search bar, with a string of icons marching along the top. Click one to download or launch native Google apps like Gmail and maps, or to jump to mobile Web sites for the panoply of Google apps.
Warmly welcomed are autocomplete search suggestions, the capability to scroll through search history, and the capability to edit a misspelled search term and begin a new search. A My Location feature that … Read more
Admit it, you've often wondered what you'd look like if someone were to build you out of Lego blocks. Unless you're a celebrity (or a famous, inanimate object) chances are slim someone's gone through the expense and effort to do so. With a firm grasp on your inner desires, Lego has come up with an iPhone app called Lego Photo that re-creates the multicolor, brickscapes based on any photo you've taken, or have stored on your iPhone or iPod Touch.
All you have to do is pick a photo from your library, or snap one … Read more
If you could download only one application for the BlackBerry smartphone, which would you choose? For many people, the single-must-have add-on is Google Mobile App. An update Thursday, to version 3.5.48, makes the free download even more useful.
Now, Google Mobile App will search through your phone's e-mail and address book--in addition to the Web--when you type or speak a name into the search bar. What's more, the e-mail address or phone contact appears in the app's search suggestions after you type (denoted by a tiny icon).
The latest version of Google's mobile app responds to keywords as well as names, with unobtrusive (read: minuscule) icons that match the keyword you entered to the content of your address book records or e-mails. That's in addition to retuning a full Web search.
You're able to call one of your contact's numbers or launch an SMS from Google Mobile App.
In addition, Google Mobile App contains a quick link for replying to an e-mail, which you can also convert to a forwarded message by going through the menu options.
Toggling between Web and device search results is made possible by clicking a "breadcrumb" link that appears in the search box.
Not everyone will want to open up Google Mobile App in order to seek out e-mail messages and buddies, but we're impressed on the whole with the phone search feature's quickness and efficiency. … Read more
The oft reported accounts of Apple's App Store developers finding faster approval times since the New Year holiday may have more to do with the impending announcement of the fabled tablet device than any iPhone concerns. As has been discussed in nearly every tech forum that mentions Apple, the struggles some developers have faced getting their Apps approved in the App Store has been one of the few (if not the only) blemish on the iPhone's domination of the mobile phone market. All that is changing though.… Read more
Google on Tuesday is making a big move with its Docs service, opening it up to all types of file uploads. This includes photos, movies, music, and ZIP archives, all of which will be stored on Google's servers.
Along with opening up Docs to additional file types, Google is also dramatically increasing the size of individual uploads. Where the company will still limit users to 500KB for Microsoft Word documents, and 10MB for PowerPoint presentations and PDFs, the new limit for all other files that cannot be converted into a Google Docs format is 250MB. This is 10 times … Read more
