Hot demand in Asian markets helped first-quarter PC shipments around the world jump 22.7 percent over the same period last year, the highest annual surge recorded by iSuppli since it began tracking the market in 2003.
The industry shipped 81.5 million PCs during the quarter, compared with 66.5 million in the prior year's quarter. Releasing the numbers on Friday, iSuppli pegged the surge in growth on strong sales as well as weak conditions at the outset of 2009.

A pair of the most-anticipated mobile computers from this year's CES show were Lenovo's U1 Hybrid and Skylight smartbook. Both ran a custom widget-based Linux OS (sometimes also called Skylight), and were powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU. But since then, both devices seem to have fallen off the map, and now we think we know why. Higher PC shipments helped Lenovo return to profitability in the fourth quarter.
The Hong Kong PC maker reported on Thursday a fourth-quarter net profit of $13 million versus last year's fourth-quarter loss of $264 million. Sales for the quarter ended March jumped 56 percent to $4.3 billion from $2.7 billion in the year-ago quarter.

In anticipation of the summer/back-to-school shopping season, Lenovo brought three new desktops out of hiding Monday. The configurable IdeaCentre A700 and B305 all-in-ones, and the IdeaCentre Q150 Nettop all at least start at less than $1,000.
