With the Palm Pre and Apple iPhone 3G S grabbing so much attention in the last couple of weeks, you might think that basic phones are becoming extinct. But don't worry, as that is far from the truth. Even this week when fancy smartphones are all the rage, Samsung and U.S. Cellular have got your back.

The new Samsung Axle has a minimalist flip phone design in simple gray. Cell phone watchers will recognize that the Axle shares its shape with MetroPCS' Samsung Byline. Features are low-end, but functional. You'll find Bluetooth, a speakerphone, voice commands, messaging, … Read more

The Humvee bids the Hummer bye bye

Amid recent developments of General Motors' chapter 11 bankruptcy and its decision to sell the all-mighty Hummer brand to a Chinese company, there's a silver lining. And it's a big one.

The U.S. Army wanted to make it crystal clear Thursday that the HMMWV (widely known as "Humvee")--the original High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle that inspired the creation of the Hummer--will continue to be made in the United States, by an American-owned company.

According to Lt. Col. Martin Downie, the U.S. Army's spokesman, though the Army's Humvee and the civilian Hummer … Read more

U.S. Chamber of Commerce to keep tabs on GM, Chrysler

U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue issued a strong statement today warning Congress of the potential downfall of too much government and union influence in production, product, workforce, and management decisions.

"If members of Congress, along with government officials from the United States to Germany to Canada, are allowed undue influence over management's decisions, then you can write this down: These companies will not return to profitability and their survival will be seriously challenged. The global talent that exists in the automotive sector must be allowed to do its job and be paid … Read more

Report: Turkish hackers breached U.S. Army servers

Hackers based in Turkey penetrated two U.S. Army Web servers and redirected traffic from those Web sites to other pages, including one with anti-American and anti-Israeli messages, according to a report in InformationWeek.

The hackers, who go by the group name "m0sted," breached a server at the Army's McAlester Ammunition Plant in Oklahoma on January 26 and a server at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Transatlantic Center in Winchester, Va., on September 19, 2007, the report said.

Investigators believe an SQL injection attack was used to exploit a vulnerability in Microsoft's SQL Server … Read more

U.S. Cellular swaps batteries for free

As of Tuesday, U.S. Cellular is offering a free Battery Swap program at its stores. All you need to do is bring a dead or dying battery to a U.S. Cellular store and you can change it out for a new charged one.

The carrier says it created the program to help customers who need a fully charged battery right away or want to replace an older battery that doesn't hold a charge. Of course, there's a catch: you will need to be a U.S. Cellular customer who has purchased a U.S. Cellular phone … Read more

Drones: America's new Air Force

Every so often in the history of war, a new weapon comes along that fundamentally rewrites the rules of battle. This is a story about a revolution in unmanned aviation that is doing just that.

Most people know them as drones; the Air Force calls them unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs. And right now, there are dozens of them in the skies over Iraq and Afghanistan, hunting down insurgents, every minute of every day.

They've become one of the most important planes in the United States Air Force--and yet the pilot is nowhere near the aircraft or the battlefield. … Read more

U.S. Cellular picks up HTC Touch Pro

Regional carrier U.S. Cellular doesn't quite have the robust smartphone lineup as the big guys, but it's been slowly beefing up its offerings. Its latest acquisition is the HTC Touch Pro, which is available now for $249.95 with a two-year contract and after rebates.

Like we said when Verizon recently launched the HTC Touch Diamond for Verizon, the HTC Touch Pro is a little late to come to U.S. Cellular, considering it's been out for a few months now and the HTC Touch Pro2 is on its way. However, the chances of the latter … Read more
