Wireless mobile printing in the desert

LORDSBURG, N.M.--Sometimes, as in climbing Mount Everest, you have to do something just because you can.

For more than a week now, I've been carting a box full of high-tech gear with me on Road Trip 2007, my sojourn around the Southwest.

One of the gadgets in that box is the Hewlett-Packard Deskjet 460 wbt, a mobile, Bluetooth-enabled printer designed for the road warrior. I guess I count as one of those.

That's why, in the middle of my drive from Tucson, Ariz., to White Sands National Monument near Las Cruces, N.M., I decided to … Read more

HP remains No. 1 in PCs

Hewlett-Packard continued its sprint ahead of the competition in the second quarter of 2007, remaining the No. 1 PC vendor in the world. While Dell has continued to struggle, Lenovo, Acer and Toshiba showed positive signs, each outpacing the worldwide PC market growth rate of 12.5 percent, according to IDC.

HP continued its successful run of strong quarters, leading all PC makers by shipping 11.3 million units, good enough for 19.3 percent of the overall market. Dell's global shipments were down almost 5 percent--to about 9.5 million PCs--from a year ago, but remained in second … Read more

Reading the HP security-acquisition tea leaves

While IBM jumped into security with the acquisition of companies such as Consul, Internet Security Systems, Micromuse and Watchfire, Hewlett-Packard sat on the sidelines. This week, HP grabbed SPI Dynamics, an application security play that started a "who will HP buy next?" buzz on the mergers-and-acquisitions grapevine.

Yes, I've heard the rumors about McAfee and Symantec, but I don't believe them. McAfee is too deep into the desktop, an area that HP has continuously shied away from. Symantec has roots in desktop security as well and would also be a big pill to swallow. The debate … Read more

HP sues ink cartridge maker for unfair competition

Hewlett-Packard is accusing European print supply maker Pelikan Hardcopy of unfair business practices in an ongoing legal spat over ink cartridges, the company announced Monday.

HP's German subsidiary, Hewlett-Packard GmbH, said in a second lawsuit filed in a German court that Pelikan's German subsidiary is selling two models of color inkjet print cartridges labeled as remanufactured products, when they are actually new. HP says it discovered Pelikan's supposed violation as part of the Imaging and Printing Group's worldwide testing efforts. HP one of the largest suppliers of printers and ink in the world. Pelikan is based … Read more

Acer aces out Lenovo as world's third-largest PC maker

Of the 62 million PCs shipped in the first quarter of 2007, the biggest story is a company that shipped a little over 4 million units. Taiwan-based Acer has taken hold of 6.8 percent of the global PC market, good enough for third place, according to market research firm iSuppli.

After taking the No. 3 slot in worldwide notebook sales from Toshiba in the fourth quarter of 2006, Acer has taken even more ground, this time from Lenovo. The Chinese computer maker is now 0.4 percent points behind Acer in worldwide computer market share.

Acer also turned in … Read more

HP's redwood property could become a state park

A piece of land owned by Hewlett-Packard since 1963 was sold to two nonprofit groups for $4 million, according to the Associated Press.

The 534-acre property, known as Little Basin, is located in the Santa Cruz Mountains and has long been used for company picnics, events and camping trips. The land is reportedly worth $13 million, and HP says it is selling it because the company's employees are not all located in or near the PC maker's San Francisco Bay Area headquarters.

"It's not a cost issue. Basically we had a minority of employees who were … Read more

HP Garage gets spot on National Registry of Historic Places

The information age just got a little older, as the "birthplace of Silicon Valley" has been formally listed on the National Register of Historic Places. More specifically, this is 367 Addison Ave. in Palo Alto, California: the garage where, in 1938, two guys named Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard started a company that became known as Hewlett-Packard the next year.

The new historic status is official as of Thursday. (You think it's been Zillowed?)

The house had been built circa 1905 and apparently once housed Palo Alto's first mayor; the garage, however, wasn't built until … Read more
